Hello my Fairy Godparents of beauty & fashion! I need advice! It's about my hair, and the best way to get rid of a lot of it.

Here's the deal: I've been growing out an asymmetrical Robyn-type haircut for a while now. Or actually, I've let one side grow to New Wave proportions, and just recently stopped shaving the other side, which is about 2 inches long now. It's a mess, but I wanted to get rid of the asymmetry, and shaving it ALL off seemed a bit drastic at the time.

So now I have enough hair on my formerly bald side to do something new, and I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO!

The "long side" is on my right side, and I've recently decided that that is the side that seems to be aging more gracefully than the left side, so I want to transition to a right side part, or no part. I want SHORT hair, but I don't mind a bit of length in the front. I want to be able to wear it messy and curly, but also like to straighten it for a sleeker look. I want something that is very NOW - it should have some interest, I don't want the regular "girly girl with short hair" type of cut. No fuzzies by the ears, please. I like pretty strong makeup looks, so it shouldn't look ridiculous with that.

I can either get in touch with my buddy's hairdresser, who is cheap, cuts hair at home, and does a great job. But she needs a lot of direction - preferably a picture to copy. I can also say "fuck it!" and book an appointment with A'dam's hottest curly-hair hairdresser. She's insanely expensive ($75 for wash+cut+styling), but she is apparently the bomb-shizzly-ding-dong, so I could probably just go and tell her "do whatever within these margins, and make it pretty" and let her do her thing.

SO!

1. does anyone have any great haircut ideas (with pictures, please!) that I can take to the home-dresser? Or;
2. should I just go to the genius and pay her hefty fee in exchange for something that will be undoubtedly awesome? (And that I can then maybe have the home-dresser keep up for me)?

Help resolve my hair crisis so I can go back to thinking about more important things!!!

Well, I used to pay the best part of US$75 to get my hair cut (by someone awesome) when I had, like, a job and stuff, so if you can afford it, I say go to the amazing hairdresser person. Then, take a pic of yourself with just-done hair and take it to your friend to work from the next time, and see how that goes.

Post a picture of your current hair! I think I kind of get the idea, but I'm really visual.

Oh man, I thought this would be about mopping. I was so jazzed there for a second.

It's perfect just like that!

I have nothing helpful to add, but am having one of those moments where I'm jealous of the curly-haired people!

Me too!

$75 sounds fairly cheap to me for a good hairdresser, so I say go to the curly expert.

I too love your hair.

I grew my Robyn hairdo into a bowl cut but I don't know how that would look with curly hair.

I wonder if a good first move would be to cut your sides to the same length & leave the top long? As the sides grow out you could probably blend the top & sides together.

Also I wonder if something like this would be workable, shape-wise? Or even as a styling idea?

Oooh, bookselves, I love that tumblr! It's the best short hair site I've seen so far. Too bad there are so few short curly cuts, but that seems to be the norm.

I've made an appointment with the curly wizard. Seeing her next week. I must say, I'm excited!!! Still don't know what I'll ask her to do, though.

I'd just tell her to do her stuff - she's a pro! Of course, this only works if you are open to surprises.

Braggity brag brag brag brag!

I went to the curly hair wizard lady, and she was awesome, and she made my hair awesome!

This is probably the best haircut I've ever gotten. And I suspect it's because it's not a "haircut" in the sense that it didn't come out of a book or from a picture, she just kind of went with what my hair does, and it turned out great. It's no longer asymmetrical, and I suspect that it will grow out well. Included in the price was a second appointment in two weeks, because curly hair apparently takes "at least a week to figure out what it's going to do" (her words), so she'll fix any weirdness then. I like what it's doing already though!

Narcissistic picture fest ahead!

I need to get the proper hairpins to do this look that she showed me:

I am so happy with this haircut, and so newly in love with my curls. Yay!

You look great(and clearly very happy with your hair)! I love the second appt to let your hair figure out what it's going to do. That is genius.
