What are your favorites? I have been a total devotee of the History of Rome podcast for a while, but apparently it's going to be ending in a month or so as the podcaster's wife is having a baby and he figures he's going to be too busy doing, you know...baby caring stuff. Fair enough. However, this means I now need to find some new podcasts! I was hoping to find some other history ones, but am not turning up a lot. I have tried a couple episodes of "Europe and its Origins" which was supposed to be pretty good and honestly...it's only okay so far, so unless it picks up a lot in the next episode, I'm out.
Despite being an avid knitter, I have never managed to get into knitting podcasts. Oops.
So, I'm looking for ideas...do you listen to podcasts regularly? Do you have any you'd recommend? |

| PurpleDoor, have you ever tried New Books in History? It's interviews with historians about their recent books. The interviewer can be a little bit annoying, but it's really interesting to hear how the authors became historians, why and how they wrote the book, etc. I believe there are other "New Books" podcasts for different subjects, but this one is my favorite. |

I really love Thrilling Adventure Hour. It's hilarious & fun, and most episodes are around 20 minutes. It made me fall in love with Paget Brewster. _________________ Back in the '70s when disco & exorcisms were all the rage, he was the man. |

the judge john hodgman podcast!
i've been burning podcasts to cd to listen to in my car, and while it seems technologically backward, hodgejohn makes it worth it.
(and This American Life, of course) _________________ xoxpuck

I mainly listen to comedy podcasts where comedians interview each other or do funny sketches. There is a lot of overlap of guests on these shows, but they are all fantastic:
Comedy Bang Bang
Who Charted?
Doug Loves Movies
WTF with Marc Maron
The Nerdist
I also listen to The Moth (stories told on stage without a script, mostly 15 minutes each), Savage Love (will make you blush if you listen in public, but I love Dan Savage), This American Life, Risk!, Get Up on This (mostly interviews indie musicians), Radiolab (entertaining sciency stuff), You Made It Weird with Pete Holmes (more interviewy stuff).
I listen to a lot of podcasts. _________________ There were doves everywhere, and they were crying their asses off. |

You might like "A History of the World in 100 Objects" by the BBC. All of the objects are from the British Museum. It is a pretty engaging podcast, but I recommend starting at the beginning and working your way through.
I also listen to "Skeptic's Guide to the Universe" (hosted by Dr. Stephen Novella, fancypants neurologist) and though I don't agree with everything I do find it clever and entertaining.
"Mysterious Universe" is good for your 'far out' fix. It is hosted by a couple of Australian guys and is mostly about ufos, bigfoot, NDEs, and other bizarre/supernatural things.
"Thinking Allowed" is a wonderful BBC social science review podcast -- very thinky, but also fast and amiable. And I have an epic crush on the host, Laurie Taylor.
"Ouch! Disability Talk Show" is a great podcast that covers disability-related topics, largely from a British perspective (since it is produced by the BBC). The hosts are really engaging, funny people.
I could go on an on, haha... _________________ I'm a sass-quatch. |

Have you tried Stuff You Missed in History Class?
I also listen to The Memory Palace (really short bits about historical things), Snap Judgement (people telling stories), The Moth (more people telling stories), Smodcast (Kevin Smith's podcast with the dreamy Scott Mosier. Lots of nazis and sex talk. It's filthy and offensive, really, but I can't get enough), The SporkFul (it's not for foodies, it's for eaters), The Dinner Party Download (things to talk about at a dinner party), 99% Invisible (LOVE this one! Everyone must give it a try), Freakonomics Radio, Doug loves Movies, and Judge John Hodgman. _________________ We are none of us alone

thanks, linty*prickles! i've been keeping my eye out for good dis/ability resources, and just assumed that a good podcast wouldn't exist (after trawling for good genderqueer ones... but i guess that *is* a substantially smaller population)... _________________ xoxpuck

Ooh, I'm already in love with her from Criminal Minds, so I will check this out. Thanks!
The only podcast I ever really got into is Stash and Burn, which is knitting. But the hosts have great chemistry and are really funny and I kind of feel like I'm sitting down to knit with two friends when I listen to their podcast. _________________ What can't that centaur woman do? |

One especially good thing about "Ouch!" is that they talk about sex and dating and partnerships fairly often, and Liz Carr (one of the hosts) is married to a woman, and famous for her raunchy stand-up. So while they don't necessarily delve every episode, it doesn't skew toward heteronormativity! YAY! _________________ I'm a sass-quatch. |
