w&p: i second rugged's rec of sonia kashuk brushes. definitely the best widely available "drugstore" brand brushes. which reminds me i need to get a few new brushes from my supplier of american goods. i've had some of these for YEARS and they've held up as well as or longer than some of my MAC brushes. totally totally worth it.

what eye shadow primer do you all use?

i've heard good things about UDs... but i'm kind of a MAC girl... i get other brands for gifts but they never really get put into rotation since it's so easy for me to carry around a MAC palette... willing to make the switch if it is honestly that awesome.

i'm also looking for a new blush. i've been using MAC's style (it's pretty much the NARS "orgasm" for MAC) for seriously the last 5 years and i think it's time i get an update. the peachy shimmery colour works for me, i wouldnt mind going a bit rosier but with a peach undertone, no shimmer needed since i wear this all the time.

in recent makeup news (lol), i've been rocking a lot of minimal cat eye with a matte red lip (MAC's ruby woo or MAC's chili). it's gone from a 1-2xs a week look to an almost daily. so happy i've gotten over my fear of a "daily" red lip. i'm looking for a darker more brownish red to throw in the mix too. looking at Daphne Guinness for MAC's "approaching storm".

i like keiko lynn's makeup tutorials (though i never really wear loud eyeshadow anymore... she does have alot of great neutral faces). she reviews/uses a lot of different brands of makeup from drugstore to dior... lots of editorial looks and daily looks, with or without glasses.
i do variations on her winged liner look all the time.

w&p, i have this set of eye brushes from eco-tools and, hand to heart, they are the best ones in my collection. so cheap too! at least in the us ...

and i love your ideas for daytime looks! at present, i'm into a swipe of gold/champagne cream shadow with lots of mascara and some bright lipstick. my current faves are 3 revlon shades i just bought -- berry haute (lilac), cherries in the snow (cool bright red), and black cherry (berry/wine color). revlon lipsticks are just as nice as any i have found at sephora.

kitchen, my favorite eye shadow primer right now is benefit's stay don't stray. elf's primer is pretty good too, and you can't beat the price.

for blushes, i'm into benefit's, particularly bella bamba (a sweet rosy/shimmery pink) and coralista (warm peachy glow). i wear one of the two of them every day.

and i also dig elf's pink passion. it's a very close dupe to nars's desire -- super duper hot bright pink. i use a very light hand and look like a dolly!!

sobriquet, i alternate between a tinted moisturizer (boot's no. 7 sold at target is my favorite) which is nice coverage but very sheer ... and laura mercier, applied with this foundation brush. the brush makes a huge difference in the finish you get!

what are you lusting after? right now, i want nars's blush palette and the kat von d candelabra palette but i've kind of bought a shit-ton of makeup in the last few months and am trying to chill a bit!

That same line of liquid foundation is pretty nice and lightweight. I even take that a step farther and mix it with moisturizer to get a lighter coverage. I have uneven spotty skin, but I can't stand the flat appearance of foundations anymore.

As far as putting on foundation without looking like a crypt keeper, my two suggestions are to mix the foundation in your palm with a drop or two of moisturizer to make it more sheer, and/or to apply with a damp cosmetic sponge. That will sheer it up too.

See, that's what I do, and with that brand of foundation. Maybe I'm just not a foundation person.

You might like the cheap-drugstore-advertised-by-a-country-singer lip gloss I mentioned earlier. It's not sooperdooper shiny but it's shiny enough for my liking, and it feels more like a balm than anything else.

Just a quick question...are we not supposed to mention brand names?

sobriquet--maybe you need a better color match?

Here are my current blush favorites:

http://sulabeauty.com/lip-and-cheek-tint/whatever-comes-next (I want to try other colors of this line, too--like the dark one. they're packaging is cute.

Another cream stick blush by ELF in the shade Pink Lemonade that's available at Target but not online. It's a shimmery peachy pink.

A crazy pink eyeshadow by Too Faced called "Mess in a Dress" that maybe isn't made anymore? Sad!

http://www.stilacosmetics.com/product_detail.asp?PMID=786&dept=3&cat=10 (It's not as crazy pink once it goes on and they have a peach version, too.)

And this
http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod3570073#sku2231967 (which I got as part of a free gift and LOVE. I use it to layer over the non-shimmer powders or cream. It also works as a nice eyeshadow for me.)

I think some people do it so that if someone googles the brand, then the boards don't come up. I have no idea.

I still mention them but that's because I'm lazy.

W&P - Yay! I'm so glad that that helped you out! =]
I figured it out by accident when I realized I had like, 6 different types of "highlighters" and was wondering what to do with them. See my note about messing around with makeup late at night when you are bored.

For brushes, I really like my Bare Minerals ones. I have a Sonia Kashuk eyeshadow brush that I love. I want to get her whole set soo badly. The ecotools ones were a little too densely packed for my liking. The bristles just feel heavy and weird and they pick up too much product for my liking. ELF brand ones I tried were absolutely terrible. They also fell apart in a week.

I recently discovered tube-technology mascara. Never going back! Waterproof, smudgeproof, and removes in a second just by gently rubbing your lashes with warm water. The brand I use is Blinc.

I am still having a hard time with eyeliner, even after buying the expensive waterproof/smudgeproof kind. I have mega oily skin and my lids get so oily that even the smudgeproof liner ends up under my lower lashes, in the corners of my eyes. I don't like the look of liquid liner (too harsh) so I suppose I need to break down and buy some eye primer to see if that keeps the pencil liner from smudging.

My favorite blush is Nars Desire. It looks hot pink in the pan, but looks very natural on my super pale skin.

I had good luck with Make Up For Ever HD foundation when I was doing my makeup for my wedding. It's moisturizing but not greasy. I have to resist the urge to get anything that says "oil free" because even though I'm oily, I need lots of moisture otherwise I end up looking cakey. The folks at Sephora helped me find a good color match and they give really generous samples too! I still use it when I'm getting fancied up but for every day, I just use a tinted moisturizer with SPF (Juice Beauty).

I use Smashbox HD concealer under my eyes to help with dark circles, though I admit my circles aren't very harsh. I like it because I tend to have flaky skin under my eyes (despite also being oily) and this concealer doesn't look crepey or dry my skin out too much like some concealers do.

That's why I did it, I just figured a lot of people would google that brand and singer - although I guess it's kinda silly now that I think about it, there's no way we can avoid using brand names on this thread.

I used to be super into makeup and wore all kinds of crazy eye looks in high school, but these days I'm just about a neutral sparkly eye (Nars Night Star) and mascara (usually Maybelline Great Lash). I love the look of bright lips and am slowly trying to get used to wearing lipstick on a regular basis. I'm in love with Nars Heat Wave. I use a tinted moisturizer/concealer combo by Pixi that I get at Target but I got a Sephora giftcard for Xmas, so I might check out some other options since I'm almost out of it.

The Lisa Eldridge tutorials someone else mentioned upthread are seriously awesome; she does a great series of basics on primer, foundation, and concealer that are really helpful.

Re: Foundation. I have the best luck using a brush that is about an inch across and flat on top. I use it to pat/dot makeup on instead of spread it (which tends to be streaky or uneven). It makes it possible to build up coverage over some areas but not others.

If anyone has recommendations for lipsticks that look good on yellowy-brown complexions, I'd love to hear them.

I got Nars Deep Throat for xmas and I am loving it sick! I also went to a Revlon warehouse sale a month ago and bought the colourstay mineral foundation and it is really cool too, doesn't have an overly powdery finish at all (unless i over apply!).

Those are my favourite new things at the moment.

sporadicus, for day, i agree that the big smoky eye is too much. sometimes though, i do a smoky eye with matte gray that i think works quite well for daytime. i leave off the eyeliner, except maybe just a smidge right along the lash line, pat matte gray on my lid, and blend it out in the crease with a matte light brown. (it's the 3rd look in this makeup geek video.)

I'm running short on time so I'm just going to say that I do this with browns and tawny reds for my eyes (they are blue and I have red hair, fair skin) for every day use and it never looks over the top because they are "day time" colors. I line with a brown-green and just use two coats of mascara. I specifically use the smashbox screen shot trio for this right now...though I'm not sure if I'm a fan of it yet. I was using mac singles before and got this as a St. Nicks gift.

I almost exclusively wear MAC or Stila but I am trying to branch off. I am loving Too Faced Amazing Face powder foundation. It's great for an asian yellow/neutral coloring. I am dying for the Urban Decay Naked palette.

I like MAC Silver Ring and Divine Knight for a daytime smokey. Both are grey and work well together. I usually do it with a black eye shadow as a liner. Another one is Stila Golightly. It's a khakis green and I lightly smoke it out with black.

I millionth Sonia Kashuk. I actually like her brushes more than my MAC ones. Way more affordable and ergonomic handles. I like Nars or MAC lipglass for gloss.

How about MAC Springsheen? It's peachy pink with some light shimmer. I love it! Or MAC Dollymix? It's the pink version. Use a light hand though, cause it can get drag-y. (It was recommended to me by a drag queen)

Try Loreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes! I will never go back to using reg. mascara again. It's actually better than Blinc and Fiberwig and sooo much cheaper.

Can someone tell me more about tube-technology mascara? I have my head in the sand lately and I have never heard of it (but want it?)
