In an effort to get myself to eat breakfast (and still roll out of bed with about 30 minutes to get out the door), I asked for (and received) one of those Bella Cucina individual smoothie maker/blenders. I love it thus far, but I'm running out of recipes.
So far, I've done the banana/pineapple/walnut thing, the berries smoothie, etc.
I'd love to incorporate carrots, apples, other fruits into my smoothies.
I'm also pretty sucky at proportions, and getting it viscose enough so that it's actually drinkable, as opposed to sludge. ;D
Any tips, recipes, and hints would be awesome! |

I buy frozen strawberries and then fresh bananas, which I peel and freeze myself. I then make smoothies with a couple handfuls of strawberries, a banana, and enough vanilla soymilk to make it drinkable. There's a line on my smoothie maker that tells me how much liquid to add for 2 servings; I usually just go by that + a little more. I love the flavor (and protein) the vanilla soymilk adds! _________________ "I tried watching downton abby. mistake. switched to ru paul's drag race." - Lacey Marie |

See, I'm of the opinion that soy milk tastes of popsicle sticks after the popsicle's been eaten. ;) |

I just read this yesterday, about adding spinach to smoothies--even fruit ones. Sounds like a good idea!

Also, my sister who is on weight watchers, makes an addictive smoothie/sorbet-type dessert, just with Trader Joe's frozen mixed berries and soy milk. Very yummy. It tastes just like ice cream! ;) |

what about yogurt? that can be yummy and give you some creamy-ness?
bananas do the creamy thing too (as mentioned upthread)...
i just made one with mixed berries, almonds, 1% milk, and a drop of vanilla.
yum! _________________ I know it's not real, but lunchboxes

Thanks for the suggestions! I do like bananas in my smoothies, and have read that they add creaminess (which makes sense).
Has anyone tried honey in their smoothies? It seems like it would be good. |

i like kiwis, mandarin oranges, a few ice cubes, and a splash of whatever juice we've got handy. i'm not a big fan of milk in smoothies for some reason.
the boy makes THE. BEST. strawberry banana smoothies. he gets a bag of the frozen smoothie mix, adds more frozen berries, and then adds strawberry-banana juice (and sometimes, banana nectar if we have it) and blends it until it's perfect. mmmmm. _________________ but i'm still here, and small. so small.

| Look in the Hispanic section of your grocery, Often they will have an amazing array of fruit nectars in cans thay you can play with. I love frozen sorbet in smoothies as opposed to yogurt. If you buy fresh fruit, it is a great idea to cut it up and freeze chunks or whole berries on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper, and then you have them on hand when needed. You can also freeze fruit juice in an ice cube tray and just store the frozen cubes in a ziploc. This would allow you to use alot of fruits that are not good for smoothies in their original form, like oranges, cranberries and pomegranites. |

| I put honey in a peanut butter smoothie. I made it once and it was really good but I don't remember where I got the recipe. I know it involved peanut butter, honey and bananas. I usually just use frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries, a banana, some plain yogurt and a tablespoon of ground flax seed. |

I do that! You can't really taste the spinach (though I wouldn't mind it if you could, either) but it does make the colour of the smoothie kind of weird.
The smoothie I've been making for a snack lately: blend a bunch of sesame seeds and some water until most (or all, but I've never been able to do that) seeds are crushed. Add one banana in pieces, a handful of berries (raspberries are yummy) and some spinach. I don't like ice cold drinks so I usually thaw frozen berries and spinach in the fridge, but you could probably use them straight from the freezer too if you have a good blender. |

| These ideas sound fantastic! I'm especially excited about the sesame seeds. |

hmm, the sesame seed idea sounds interesting. i bet you could play around with sesame seeds, a nut butter or tahini and honey and come up with something that tasted a little like those crunchy sesame candies.
this has reminded me that i need a new blender. my old one was a hand me down from the hubs grandma, older than me and a beautiful shade of avocado. the rubber seal disintegrated and i've been too heartbroken to get a new one. maybe one of the oster beehive ones... they look kind of vintage-y. too bad they don't come in avocado.

for a while i was addicted to a smoothie made with
*5th generation chocolate soymilk (I PROMISE that this is good. i am NOT a soymilk drinker and do not buy it. however, my sister bought it while on weight watchers and raved, so i tried it. i don't drink it straight, but in this, it is yumm-o) *tbsp. peanut butter (i like chunky)
*tbsp. espresso powder or instant coffee
*ice
*tsp. vanilla extract
*splash of fat free milk
*sometimes a banana
its like a healthy version of a frappechino. wakes you up and keeps you going until lunch. _________________ http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7372936796866511767 |
