Hi! Im looking for some advice. Over spring break next March, my friend and I are planning to take a vacay. Our #1 hope is to go to Belize and my friend has also mentioned Mazatlan as a place of interest. I dont know anything about Mazatlan except that flight prices are (at the moment) about $300 cheaper than flights to Belize. Im thinking the difference could even out regarding food and hotel costs, etc... but I really have no idea!
Has anyone been to both places or researched both places and have a way to weigh in?
Also, does anyone know the best time (month) to buy tickets for Spring Break for the best rates?
The photos of Belize are so much more beautiful... would it cost THAT much more to go there? _________________ Yeah... well... you know, that's just like... uh... your opinion, man.

| I vote Mazatlan just because the one person I know who went to Belize wasn't all that crazy about it. However, several people in my family have been to coastal Mexico (not Cancun!), and LOVED it. My parents had a great time hiking up some Mayan ruins. Mexico is much cheaper all around than Belize too. |

I went to Mazatlan when I was 12. I was really disappointed. The sand on the beach was coarse, going in the ocean was like being exfoliated by a power-washer. The food was eh, I didn't eat mexican back then so I fasted that week. I went in August in the hot hot heat to a time share and now I never ever want to go to a time share. I also got my period while I was there. Can you sense my hate for that vacation? It was pretty though, idk what you want to do while there but I would suggest Belize. Since Mazatlan is a coastal peasant fishing town there is not much to do there. _________________ how could it hurt you, if it looks so good? |

Thanks for the input, ladies.
The more I researched yesterday the more convinced I was that Belize is where it is at. It is going to be more expensive to get there, for sure.
We will see how my friend, who has ALWAYS wanted to go to Belize, feels about it considering that she suggested Mazatlan as an alternative.
Any other advice is appreciated!
Im hoping I can find out if buying the tickets asap is the best idea or if there will be some type of fare sale to wait for... _________________ Yeah... well... you know, that's just like... uh... your opinion, man.

Uh, I think that's not true - just depends what you like to do!
Mazatlan is cheaper, I went for Spring Break one year and we had a blast just going to discos, laying by the pool/on the beach, hanging out. There IS a downtown area so there's stuff to see (though we didn't go). There's definitely stuff to do though.
I've never been to Belize, but would like to go.
I've been to lots of places in Mexico though and I LOVE it. The Pacific side of Mexico won't have the nice oceans like the Caribbean side though - I was in Puerta Vallarta like 2 years ago and I don't think I went in the ocean at all (not a fan of the ocean anyway) but there's TONS of stuff to do there too- swimming with dolphins, whale watching, a canopy tour (zip lines through the jungle), a city, beautiful hills, bike rides. I'm sure there's lots of the same stuff in Mazatlan - but if Belize is too expensive, Consider Puerto Vallarta! |

| i went to belize this summer. i found that my airfare went down about $120 if i flew into guatemala city and out of belize city for whatever reason. so maybe check that out and migrate and see both counties? i was much more impressed with guatemala than belize in all honesty, although i had a fabulous time in belize as well... i do wish that i was PADI certified while i was there, as i hear belize has some of the world's best scuba diving... |

sleepyhouse: i was with my parents and two other couples. all non-go-er-outers, weren't interested in shopping, they just wanted to chill. we went out to eat once and spent a lot of money on a dinner because we felt we had to since we already went out to the downtown. I remember going with my mom once too, we took the bus and walked around, saw a market, got cat-called lol I bought a sun pendant with amber that I don't really wear too much.
I forgot to mention, there are a lot of silver stores there so I suggest looking up the price of an ounce (gram idk which one) before you go so you can haggle properly. _________________ how could it hurt you, if it looks so good? |

I went to Mazatlan for spring break once in college. The only way I'd recommend it is if you're after a very stereotypical beach vacation -- bars, beach and trinket shopping. It's not particularly charming, either--and it's really spread out.
Belize is the obvious choice to me. |
