Just about everything on this thread I've read, I agree with. On the Road and Catcher in the Rye are two of the very, very few books I've given up on.
The Little Friend was SO disappointing. I had no expectations going into it, but the middle 200 pages were fantastic. It's only the beginning and end that are terrible. When the end never got good again, I was heartbroken.
I actually like Breakfast of Champions; my Vonnegut book-of-shame is Mother Night. I'm a total Vonnegut fangirl, but I just cannot deal with that fuckin' book. _________________ "all that beige minimalism makes my penis soft!" - madgeylou |

The boards have been getting a lot of spam lately, so people showing up and posting in archived threads can look suspiciously like spam. One way to avoid this can be to introduce yourself in the La Vida Crafty board and let us know a little more about you and if you are brand new or have been lurking and not posting for awhile. _________________ "I hate that they're giving tea a bad name. Do i have to start a new thread to introduce myself in the La Vida Crafty section? or there's a thread where we can just post or reply our introduction?
I just don't want to start a new topic without permission, i might get deleted :/ |

You can start a new topic in any of the boards and as long as you are clearly not spamming* and are following the How To Glitter guidelines, it should stay up and not get deleted. To introduce yourself, you can start a topic and call it something like "Hello! Introducing myself" and then tell us how you found Glitter and how long you have been reading and what crafty things you are interested in (as long as you are comfortable with it; you don't have to tell us any of those things if you don't want to).
*For guidelines on what could be interpreted as spamming, check the Business Side ads on glitter sticky post, and keep in mind that mods will be on the lookout for old threads getting resurrected (especially archived threads) and signature lines/profile information that looks spammy. We don't get many new people here who aren't spammers. _________________ "I hate that they're giving tea a bad name. Tea is a peaceful, gentle drink." - Teahugger |

Hi meryld! Welcome! It's nice to see someone new who isn't spam.
I loved Hunger Games and Catching Fire, but I was completely bored by Mockingjay. There's just not a lot of action and it goes around in circles. I considered stopping reading at the part where Katniss realizes she could live without a dude, and I wish I had. The ending/postscript is awful.
I hate Nabokov for the content (I read Lolita and started Pale Fire) but he writes such lyrical, beautiful prose. It blows my mind that he was an accomplished writer in multiple languages, too. Maybe I should give him another go. |

I'm thinking about reading Hunger Games. It was suggested to me by my ex, but when I started reading it, I just couldn't get into it. I chalked it up to "this is why he's an ex!"
Buuuuut, it's recently been recommended to me by someone I actually like, so I think I'll give it another shot.
A book I hated (HATED) was Love in the Time of Cholera. Oh my god, I hate it so much. There's a scene in it where dude's molesting a girl (she's very young and somehow related to him, I believe). I can't think of the word for it, but he's, like, training her so she thinks this is a healthy, normal sort of thing. Anyway, it refers to a particular peice of anatomy as "dickey bird"... you know, to make it seems more friendly to a little girl, I suppose.
Gross. Gross. Gross.
I was soooo disappointed in it. The only likable character in the entire book dies almost immediately. _________________ <3 |

Yeah, add me to the list of people who can't get past the horrific content of Lolita to just appreciate the writing. I am also planning to never, ever read American Psycho or The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.
christinaheart, thank you for explaining why you hated Love in the Time of Cholera. I have now removed it from my to-read list. I read the Hunger Games b/c my sisters really loved the books, but if I had to choose, I'd go for the Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld over the Hunger Games. It touches on a lot of the same concepts, minus the children slaughtering each other, and I also prefer the way the Uglies series is written. Personal style preference. _________________ "I hate that they're giving tea a bad name. Tea is a peaceful, gentle drink." - Teahugger |
