The general public being.... men? ;)

(I know what you meant, it was just that this sentence sounded funny when I first read it, so I had to point that out.)

Can they test you and tell you exactly what you need to take and what you are deficient in?
I should know this, but I have been w/o health insurance most of my life. I'm getting it again soon and I want to get in and get tested and checked for every possible condition known to man.

Your description completely and totally describes how I feel when my iron gets low, right down to the "here but not here" feeling. I could be in a store and find my self wandering around in a daze not able to remember what I was even there to buy. ugh, I hate that feeling!

I take a multi every day, it's CVS chewable because I like the taste more than Centrum chewables (adult chewables, not Flinstones!). I also take a B supplement probably every other day. I notice a really nice increase in general energy w/ the B vitamins, not to mention slightly reduced cramp pain during my period, but I don't take them every day until a week before my period.

Sometimes I will also put an Emergen C packet into a glass of iced tea or water. Those things are awesome, lots of B vitamins, zinc and vitamin C, good for when you have a cold or feel like you are getting one.

I don't take a vitamin pill daily, though I've been trying to get started with that for years now. I have, however, recently started taking a daily acidophilus pill because I was on antibiotics and it was advised so I didn't get yeast infections. I kept taking it after the antibiotics though because it's supposed to be good for that. I call it my "vagina pill!"
I also have a protein shake for breakfast monday-friday. I'm a vegetarian and I like to have my protein shake just to make sure I'm getting some protein in my diet.

Yeah, I never realized that feeling that way was a symptom of anything, until I found out my iron was low. I haven't once felt that way since starting to take a multi vitamin w/ iron in it. I realized there was just no way to really eat the amount of iron that I'm supposed to get on a daily basis, and iron pills make me feel gross, so the multi works really well for me.

Wow. Well I am glad I helped!
The nice part is, at least once you know what "normal" as far as iron levels feels like, you can tell when you need to pay closer attention to it.
I actually feel MUCH better than I did earlier today myself. I felt like a fog lifted off my brain after awhile. Soo I too have to start religously taking my multi. Especially with tests this week.

It makes me wonder just how many people are anemic and have no idea? Because I certainly didn't know what I was feeling was caused by that. I just figured I was somehow not getting enough sleep.

I am a fan of the multivitamins as well! And I also take iron supplements and we just started fish oil capsules. But, ugh, the burps! I sort of can't hang with the fish-burps, but we got the Value Pack, so I'll deal.

I can get vitamins and other things super cheap since I work for one of the big companies. If anyone needs vitamin-buying assistance, PM me and I can hook you up!

Maybe you already do this, but try taking the fish oil with a substantial meal. . I tried taking mine at breakfast when I only have a bowl of cereal, and it was horrible. I switched to taking it at lunch, and I haven't had a single fish burp for two days. Before, I would take it at breakfast, and sit there burping up fish all day long. ugh. I don't even eat that much for lunch, but I think since it's more solid foods, they help keep the fish oil from just sitting there in my stomach.

I take fish oil capsules and women's multivitamins when I remember to or feel like it. I eat a reasonably healthy diet so I don't worry too much about it.

When I was anemic (after donating blood and forgetting to take the iron supplements they gave me...) I would feel dizzy, like low-blood-pressure-dizzy.

Remember, though, that it's not good to take too much of some vitamins and minerals. An excess of water-soluble vitamins (B and C) you will just pee out, but the fat-soluble ones will be stored for some time in your body. As will iron (google "too much iron" or "excess iron" - fatigue can actually be a symptom of iron overload).

If you want to guestimate, you could keep a food diary on www.fitday.com for a week or so and check the "reports" section to see if you're getting the RDA for the different vitamins and minerals. Even on days when I eat the healthiest, it's still hard to get all my vitamins and minerals solely from food.

I take a multi and a magnesium/calcium. I have strong diabetic genes in my family, and several studies have shown that adequate magnesium intake is strongly correlated with not developing diabetes, so I'm all over it. I took B vitamins for a while, but didn't notice a difference in energy when I stopped taking them. I bought flax oil capsules but haven't taken them yet, I don't know why I'm so resistant. I'm veg and essential fatty acids are the only nutrient I think I don't get enough of.

I've been taking a multivitamin, b-complex, mega c, and a 5-htp almost everyday for a week. It's hard to tell a real difference yet.

Question: Can anyone who takes 5-htp tell me about the side effects you've had? I'm honestly not sure if it's the supplement, but I've been bothered by an eye twitch this week I haven't had in a few years.
Also, when is the best time of day to take it?
