My 5th anniversary is in 16 days. Our vacations are typically road trips and we've both been hankering to step foot on good, solid Canadian soil since we moved to Ohio three years ago.
I'm hoping to gather recommendations from the Canadian glitterati. If we're driving from central Ohio (and it takes about 2 hours to get to Lake Erie), how far into Canada can we get in one day? It looks like Ontario and Ottawa are closest but I'm eager to hear whether there is anything in the southeast that is accessible and interesting.
The other issue is that I'm convinced that we need our passports to cross back to the States whereas he thinks our driver's licenses are sufficient. Anyone cross recently and can fill me in? |

| As long as you're a US citizen, you will not need a passport- just a license for photo ID. |

Ok, I brushed up on my CA geography and Niagara Falls is 5.25 hours away and Toronto is 6.5 hours away from home.
Considering that I've ALWAYS wanted to see Niagara Falls, I gues we'll be going there. Any additional advice, warnings, friendly suggestions? |

| The last time I came back from Canada (in May) the border asked for our birth certificates as well as our licenses. They can be really picky, so make sure you have at least your birth certificate as well...if not a passport. By 2007 I think we will all be required to have passports to cross. |

I'm not sure what the US gov't requires to get back into the States, but to get back into Canada we're told to have 2 pieces of ID, preferably both with pictures. If you only have 1 picture ID, then the other ID should be gov't issue such as a birth certificate, care card, SIN card, etc.
I just crossed the border (Alaska to BC) repeatedly - 9 times - on Monday, but that's a whole different story!
And sorry, I have no tricks and tips about Niagra Falls. Really, you should say Boo to Ontario and drive all the way across the country to see my part of Canada! _________________ http://craftedmayhem.tripod.com |

I'm leaving for Tornoto tomorrow morning, but, I'm flying. The airlines are requiring a birth certificate and photo ID if not a passport for re-entry into the US. It may be less strict at a ground boarder crossing, but I'm not sure. I'll be back on Wednesday, and I'll post again because we're also doing a side trip to Niagara (which I've also been really wanting to see after watching Wonderfalls last year) and we might cross back into the US during the side trip. _________________ Where am I going and what am I doing in this handbasket? |

If I had more than 4 days, I would sooooo be making a grand tour of our beautiful Northern neighbor.
I've been to Victoria BC once and thought it was a truly beautiful city.
I checked the State Department website and until Dec. 2006, it looks like I can get away with using my DL and birth certificate. I just don't have enough time to get a passport but after this, I will get them for both of us and I VOW! to keep them updated. |
