Mr. Knittykat coerced me into buying a corned beef brisket & a head of cabbage. He desires corned beef & cabbage. I don't eat the stuff--I think it's one of the worst things one could possibly eat, but I'm going to give it the old college try for him.

I would like to use my crock pot if possible...so tell me how to cook this stuff!

My coworker told me to put it in a 300 degree oven for 3 hours with 3 cups of water, but I don't really have 3 hours once I get home from work tomorrow. I could run home from work at lunch I suppose...

Any other suggestions?

I simmer it according to package directions. About 20 minutes before it's done, I toss in some huge chunks of cabbage. I think it turns out really good. It really shrinks, so don't be fooled by it's size. I like to serve it with mashed potatoes and horseradish.

Like just in a big pot on the stove? About how long? (I know, I can look at the package, but I'm just wondering if it's more or less than 3 hours).

I figured you would have an answer and I was hoping you were online!

the absolute BEST way to cook up a corned beef is with a pressure cooker...instead of boiling the flavor out, in infuses it. Cooks in no time, and is so delicious!!! (ok, this is the one thing I really miss having given up red meat..).

I made one yesterday - i just followed the directions - boil your water, put the brisket in, boil for 10 minutes, then lower the heat to simmer and cook for 1 hour per pound, until fork tender. Like pretendinginsanity said, put your cabbage in about 20 minutes before it's done.

Or you can do it in your crockpot. I've put the brisket in with a bottle or can of beer, and put it on low throughout the day (smells really bad at first, but it turns out good!). You can always boil the cabbage when you get home.

That's what I'm doing, ducky. I stuck it in the crock pot this morning and I'll cook the cabbage when I get home. Oh, and I also have to cook *my* dinner when I get home ;-)

I tried it once. Ick. ;-)

I'm looking forward to a nice chicken breast with BBQ sauce, a baked potato, and peas! Mr. Knitty hates peas so we hardly ever have them. He can have his icky cabbage--I get all the peas!
