I have my second horseback riding lesson on Sunday. The first lesson, the horse had just had a baby and did not want to do anything but bite my foot. So frustrating! For the lessons coming up, I will be using a horse who is used to doing lessons.
Right now I have one hour scheduled and I'm planning to do 30 minutes a week, all private lessons. I might switch to semi-private for cost if I do this long term.
I would do group lessons to keep the cost down except they don't start for a while and I'm looking to do this right now.
My bf's sister has five horses so if I can pick up some horse skills, we will be able to take hers out on a trail. We are also looking at a cool private horseback ride on the beach when we go to Bermuda in October.

So what do you know about horses?

I hade horses growing up, but I went riding a few months back and realized that I suck at it now! I remember all the stuff I'm supposed to do (heels down, relaxed butt, grip with the knees.... right?!), but when the horse was cantering I was all unbalanced and falling off. It made me want to take lessons again. Why's it so freaking expensive, though?!

I rode Western when I was young and had just started English a bit when I lost interest and maybe my horse died or something. I can't remember. Otherwise we sold it. It looks really fun to jump. I'd like to try that. What kind of riding are you doing?

I'm starting English and I'm going to tell the instructor my objective is going to be jumping. I have my second lesson today. I am pretty excited about the lesson, spending time with horses and learning something that nobody I know does.

I grew up with horses. My mom had had horses as a teenager and we got our first family horses when I was a young child (mine was a pony named Oreo). I had horses all up through high school and also rode a bit in college. I rode mostly western (4H, and later reining) but did some english, too. And when I was still painting my main subject was horses, and my college fine arts thesis show centered around horse imagery.

I would really love to start riding again, but mostly just casually (a few times a month). It's been hard to find someone that wants to do a lease at that level, and I really have no interest in lessons because I already know what I'm doing.

Anyway, horses! Yay!!

p.s. here is me on my first pony. He was so cute but so naughty.

Can you become a rider with just weekly lessons? I can only afford a half hour lesson once a week and I am worried that without being able to practice I will just not be able to figure it 0ut.

You can definitely learn the basics. It depends on what your goal is tho... Are you hoping to get comfortable enough that you can ride your boyfriend's sister's horses and ride on the beach in Bermuda? This will definitely be achievable. If you want to do show jumping tho, well that's probably going to take a little more involvement.

I stumbled across this thread when I was looking for a different thread, so I just wanted to pop in and say "yay horses"!

PrickleyPete, how are you doing with the riding? Also aliceinwonderland, I know you were thinking about taking some riding lessons. Did you ever?

I started leasing a horse that lives just around the block in my neighborhood. His name is Sammy and he is SO awesome. I think the lady who owns him had no idea he was such a nice, sweet horse because someone gave him to her last year, and she hasn't ridden him much since she owns 5 other horses. I haven't been able to ride for a few days (we had a snowstorm and then I was busy getting ready for the GRE today), and I totally had a dream about him last night because I think my subconsciousness was missing him. Also in the dream he looked just like my wonderful companion horse from childhood (he doesn't really IRL) and at one point in the dream I called out that other horse's name (which was kind of special because I used to dream about that other horse all the time after he passed, but I haven't for a few years).

My boyfriend ended up buying a horse for me to share with his mother so now I pretty much have a horse. I can only see him on the weekends since he is 45 minutes away from my house. He is a wonderful Paso Fino and really well trained so I am pretty happy. I did riding lessons for about two months but since I got the basics down I stopped. My horse is for trails only so I don't need to take jumping lessons, so my basic turns, backwards and forwards are all I need to know.

Wow, so cool! Paso Finos are a really cool breed. They're not very common around here at all, but I have been to Paso Fino horse shows in the past and they're really something to see with their neat gaits. Aren't they supposed to be super smart, too, and able to learn tricks?

Yay, I'm so happy for you... What's your horse's name?

I took care of a horse once when I did a live-in assistant position in Arizona. The horse wasn't a horse who had ever had people riding him or if he did he was really not into it, so by the time I came along no one would even try. I loved him though. I would go out at night to talk to him, especially when I was intoxicated. He escaped a few times too. It was kinda scary.

Where I live now I see some pretty cheap rentals and a great site for lessons and camps for kids. I definitely want to get my kids into it. Actually I've seen a few work/trade situations for leasing or lessons. It doesn't seem possible for me right now, but it is definitely a goal of mine to at least get my girls into horses.
