Dang, I'm groggy this morning, and my iced coffee (real stuff instead of decaf) isn't doing diddly squat for me.

Staying awake til past midnight last night catching up with two episodes of The Glee Project probably wasn't a wise decision. Oh well.

And this week I've had more than my share of real, caffeinated coffee and even part of a Dr Pepper.

Vicious Cycle, yes, I know thee well.

Anyway, I guess I'm just sharing my grumpiness, all in the name of asking: does coffee really make ANYBODY feel more awake?

The last time I turned out the light at 11:40 I was in a world of hurt the next day, so for me going to bed at that time would just not work. The next day I had a ton of coffee but it was not enough to combat the bone-tiredness I felt.
I think if you drink coffee every day you might get used to it and not feel a zing, but for me I can definitely tell if I don't have any- that only happens like if I am on vacation and have not been able to leave the room yet to go get some. Coffee upon waking is pretty much a part of my morning, and luckily my bf's as well so when we're together one of us is on the coffee hunt.
We were out of town last weekend and both mornings he got up before me and brought back coffee. We also go to Starbucks when we're out and about so coffee is part of our thing together.

Have you tried Energy Strips? They are supposed to be like a cup of coffee, but I honestly don't notice anything with them except the bad taste they leave in your mouth. I keep taking them, you can always hope...

Definitely in the "I notice if I don't have any coffee" camp. If I drink less coffee than usual and then have one I do get an extra buzz, for sure.

But it doesn't replace sleep in any way, you know?

It depends.

I mean, I totally notice if I don't have any, because I get a terrible headache. But if I'm working on a tiny amount of sleep (which for me is 3 hours or less), then no, coffee doesn't make me feel any more alert. If I'm working on my usual 5-7 hours of sleep (more often on the side of 7, at least), then yes, coffee does wake me up.

Coffee makes me feel slightly more awake. I drink it every day. Sometimes I forget to make some in the morning, so I will stop and get some in the afternoon. When I drink those cups in the afternoon, they really jolt me awake.

I think if you have a caffeine tolerance and you are used to caffeine, then drinking coffee is not going to make you feel as awake as if you don't do it on a regular basis.

To jump start my ass on a normal day it works. If I'm super super tired -- nah, its not going to do much. I actually think staying very hydrated helps more when you're super tired. Maybe because you have to pee a lot and that keeps you somewhat alert.

One of the many reasons I'll probably never have children (aside from being broke, single, depressed, old, etc...) is I cannot deal with sleep deprivation. "Daysleeper" comes from when I joined g* and worked overnights. That screeeewed me up royally. After 2 years of barely working I've been able to get all the sleep I need or want. I can't go back to sleep deprivation, no way, no how.

It is an ass-kicker, that sleep deprivation. That's the #1 reason the Crumblette is an only child. I am not doing the newborn phase ever ever EVER again.

Whenever I have one of those terrible sleepless nights and feel awful the next day, I always think of moms and rejoyce that I am not one of them. The way I feel on those days, I would never be able to be nice to a smaller creature who was dependent upon me. It takes a special person to move past their sleep deprivation and do good parenting- coffee or not. I am not one of those people, especially on the days I can barely take care of myself.

Is 3:00 pm too late for an energy strip?
