Question: are S e p h o r a salespeople encouraged to push certain brands over others in any way?
I've gone there twice recently. First time, salesperson recommended a mix products from one specific high-end brand and from the store brand. Second time, salesperson recommended products from another high-end brand, even though I told her I'd been recommended a different high-end brand by a friend. When I asked why she recommended one over the other, she fidgeted a little and talked about vitamins and natural ingredients. Which is fine, but both brands make those claims.
If this is the case, I'd mind less if they were up-front about it. I'd also mind less if it meant I really got what I wanted. What has happened both times is I have bought a tinted moisturizer they recommended and put on me, it looks ok in the store, and then later in the day I notice that it's too beige for me. I'm returning this purchase and then going to M A C , which is what I should have done in the first place because it looks more and more like there really isn't any other brand with product matching my skin tone. _________________ "I hate that they're giving tea a bad name. Meexie, the Sephora people in The NL have been very upfront with me in saying that they were given/attended a workshop using certain products to try them out, and that that was why they recommended it. I like it that they were so honest about it, because it's a reasoning that I understand. When I attended the Bobbi Brown workshop I was also very enthusiastic about some of there products (and I may buy some of them when I have some cash), but I also realize that had it been a MAC workshop, I'd be all over their stuff.
I recommend beautypedia.com for neutral information on products. _________________ The plural of anecdote is not data.

I have the revlon and the NYColor brand stains, and neither tastes that bad, but they don't wear as well as I'd like.
In other news, I bought Kat Von D's eye tattoo eyeliner and LOVE it. It's pretty easy to apply and lasts like crazy, even without primer. Thanks for telling me I needed to switch liners :) _________________ With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. |

Thank you for that rec, and the explanation. It makes sense to me that the salespeople would talk up the lines they've been trained in using. _________________ "I hate that they're giving tea a bad name. Tea is a peaceful, gentle drink." - Teahugger |

Well, did you know that it's really easy to make your own? Benetint is, like, water with glycerin, rosewater, and coloring. You can mix up your own using food coloring (Wilsons gel colors work well) and you could add a flavor too! _________________ The plural of anecdote is not data.

| Is there any special reason to use eye-makeup remover? I've never had any problems removing mine with regular facial cleanser while I wash my face. Therefore, it's a product that I'm consistently puzzled by. |

Good to know! I started using Benetit and really like it as a product, but I despise the scent. I don't find it has any taste, or at least I don't taste it when I use it. _________________ i live at the foot of a mountain: some of my adventures |

I use Ceta*phil to wash my face and it is not good with removing all brands of mascara so I use eye makeup remover pads to get what is leftover underneath my eyes after I wash my face.
I find that if I have a mascara that does not smudge or flake by the end of the day it is not going to come off easily with just washing my face at night, but the mascaras that flake and smudge will wash right off. _________________ If you don't talk to your cat about catnip, someone else will. |

Hmm. For me, the yellow doesn't do anything to hide ruddiness for me though. It just makes me have this odd cast to my skintone.
The Mac foundation that's NW15, which matches my skintone, is the pink based one, and it covers up redness?
Their NC15, which is the cool toned one, has a yellow base to it, which doesn't match my skintone. I tried them both on at the counter, that's why I was surprised to learn I had a warm skintone.
So it sounds like the Bobbi Brown makeup is opposite of MAC or something. The problem is, most of that stuff is brand specific, and not generalized enough. |
NW stands for "neutralizes warm" and NC for "neutralizes cool" so it's confusing. Most people think NC is cool toned and NW is warm toned.
I am too pale for most foundations. I also have a neutral undertone and not cool or warm. I mix the lightest shade of MUFE HD foundation (110 porcelain) with Fate Atelier's Zero Minus (a white foundation) in the winter. I'm pretty much the palest person on the planet. _________________ candy to carrots |

| I walked into Sephora the other day to buy some eyeliner and mascara and was totally overwhelmed! Oh my heavens how do people do it. Finally someone helped me and I wound up buying purple eyeliner (NARS) which I love! it's subtle but interesting. yep, most boring makeup story ever, I know. |

I went into Sephora for the first time yesterday and got a Clinique BB cream and some Laura Mercier lipstick. Expensive! But I have been unhappy with my uneven toned, shiny skin and tired of my spf moisturizer for a while, so I feel okay about it. I'm extra pretty! The BB cream wears really well so far. And I feel prepared for some events coming up where I'll have my picture taken / be making first impressions.
It was so nice to just go in and say, I don't wear makeup, can you help me find something simple, try a few things, and be done. I feel the same way about haircuts - I'd rather just tell a pro more or less what I like and let them do me up. |

My favorite thread!!!
I recently purchased two items through Ebay. First of all a Sleek Blush-by-3 palette in lace. It's a palette with three blushes. One appears to be bright orange, but appears as a fresh peach on the skin. The second is a muted pink with gold shimmer (purportedly resembling NARS "Orgasm", but I wouldn't know since NARS does not exist here). The third is a coral that looks red in the pan but is a true coral on. I really recommend the palette. It's nice to have a few colors to choose from, since I like to offset my bright lips with a different hue. I was never a fan of blush in the past, but I've been converted. It really brings some color to my face, and I now forego eye shadow sometimes in favor of doing just mascara, blush and eyeliner (with or without bright lips).
Speaking of eyeliner: I found a great Ebay deal for a set of 5 travel sized Urban Decay 24/7 eye pencils. LOVE. THEM! First eye pencils that don't end up all over the place after a few hours.
Gosh I love makeup.
Still looking for affordable, good quality make up brushes though. Sonia Kashuk looked great, but I can't find a place to buy it here, and Ebay isn't really helping much. _________________ The plural of anecdote is not data.

On my weekend trip to SF this weekend, I went to Sephora and bought the most amazing, long-lasting, brightest red lipstick I could find (Stila's long wear liquid lip color in "Fiery".) I feel like a foxy bad ass right now. _________________ Wenn's dir nicht gefällt, mach neu. |

Not to be a downer, but please be super careful buying makeup off of ebay. Unfortunately most of the stuff sold on there as "M.A.C" and the bigger brands are fakes from china, with god knows what chemicals in them. So make sure you check the threads they have in the community section about counterfeits. It's crazy how they really mimic the packages almost exactly, but once you know what to look for you can easily tell that they're not real.
For brushes, Sigma brushes or Crown Brushes are both nice! _________________ old user, new name & profile. |

Don't worry, I checked! There is quite a lot of real stuff out there, but it won't be AS cheap as the fakes. And the tell-tale signs are pretty obvious once you know what to look for. But thanks for your concern! I'd hate to be sticking poison on my face without knowing.
I've heard good things about Sigma brushes. Maybe I should invest. Applying blush with a huge, cheapie powder brush is kind of difficult or can make you end up looking like either a very creepy clown, or Pikachu. _________________ The plural of anecdote is not data.
