bookeselves, I'm pretty sure SodaStreams make *zero* sugar fizzy water, assuming you don't put any of those cordial things in, obvs.

I have an iSi seltzer maker (just the plain metal one) and all you put in it is plain cold water. I feel like if you are not wanting it to taste like actual soda like the flavor that sodastream promotes, you don't need the expense of the sodastream. The only issue with the iSi is that the CO2 cartridges are really small and it is pretty wasteful if you drink a lot of fizzy water. But I've been meaning to look into places that recycle the cartridges.

I think that fizzing up water makes it taste better if it wasn't tasty before, but I don't really have ideas for non-sugary flavors, unless you add unsweeted iced tea or something. I usually only add some citrus, but obviously that has sugar too.

1) Does anyone have ideas for adding fizz/flavour to drinks without adding sugar? The water here tastes terrible on its own, and filtered water still tastes pretty boring to me. If I owned a sodastream could I make low sugar fizzy water? I really want a reason to buy one of those.

You can add fruit to water to give it a little bit of flavo(u)r, either just putting cut-up fruit in a pitcher (very mild taste) or blending ripe fruit with water to make an agua fresca, if you don't mind fruit sugar. Most recipes call for sweetener, but if you use really sweet, ripe fruit (cherries, mangoes, and melons are great), you may like the taste just fine without added refined sugar. Or make an herbal tea with something that has a naturally sweet taste, like rooibos, honeybush, fennel seed, or licorice root. I like making tea using fresh mint (with green tea or black tea sometimes) and keeping a big bottle of it in the fridge.

No experience or prior knowledge of iSi, but I disagree about the expense of the sodastream not being worth it unless you want the flavor... A and I used to buy a TON of seltzer, and since getting our sodastream, we are able to drink 1 to 2 liters of seltzer that we make ourselves (almost always unflavored) per night without any added waste -- in the past, that would've been a few cans or possibly an entire 2-liter bottle headed into our recycling. Our recycling has been cut in half...and even drinking that much seltzer, we only replace the CO2 every month or so (and trade in for recycled cartridges at Bed Bath and Beyond).

Bookselves, sodastream does have unsweetened fruit flavors. We don't use ours often, but they're pretty good - it really just adds a hint of fruit flavor.

I posted to this thread & then I went and bought a frappuccino that was supposed to taste like a cookie. Fail. Maybe sugar really is an addiction?

Anyhow, looking into it more... the Sodastream has a proprietary cartridge system & iSi ones don't? But the iSi ones are smaller? I think I will do a bit of shopping near me and see what's available locally for refills. Absolutely don't think that shipping empty cartridges back is really something I'd be up for. Any Canadians have any ideas about this?

I also use a SodaStream and really like it.
I drink my fizzy water with no sweetener.
I like to squeeze a lemon or lime in it.
You can also buy flavor essences, like milyssa mentioned, that have no sweetener, like these:
http://www.sodastreamusa.com/MyWater-Flavor-Essence-Mint-P264.aspx
I like the mint. You don't need a SodaStream to use these. You could add a drop to any fizzy water or regular water.

As far as what to drink at a bar w/out sugar (except for the alcohol), I like a gin and soda, with plenty of lime.

I am not a huge fizzy water person, but I looooooove to squeeze a lemon into my water. A few slices of orange or lime are good too, but lemon is definitely my go-to.

I also like to make iced mint tea during warmer weather (or hot mint tea when it's cold).

Here is a blog post I wrote a while ago about cutting out sugar and how that was helpful for me (the URL is disguised by a bit.ly link for go*gle reasons): http://bit.ly/L6YVkv
