My parents are celebrating their 50th anniversary on Saturday. We are having a party at my sister's house with just family ( my parents don't really have any close friends and all of our family live far away. We're going to have food made by my sister and myself and we ordered a cake. I'm buying balloons ( I think) and we put an announcement in the paper for Sunday. I was just wondering if there are any other little things we could do to make it nice for them? I just had an idea while I was typing this to play their wedding song and make them dance to it! :)

Mohawk- I love that idea! The only problem is that all of the family pictures are in my parents' house and I'm staying with them right now and they are always home, or I'm out with them! :) It was hard enough sneaking the wedding picture for the newspaper announcement. But, in the next day or so, I might try to stay at home and see what I can do while they're gone. Actually, my son is really good at doing power point slide shows, maybe I'll just ask him to do something! :)

We had a powerpoint for my parents' 50th.

I think we also had their wedding picture printed on the cake. At least, I know we did that for their 40th, and I think we did it again.

crookedtree- Great idea! They got married in the Boston area.Maybe I can find something online. There may even be a copy in their wedding album. I'll check when I can today!

What about getting a blank book and/or having the family together write "50 Good Things About Mom & Dad's Life Together" ... or 50 great memories, or 50 things we love about Mom and Dad ... that sort of thing?

What about a card shower? That's all the rage here with older people - they don't like to get gifts, but they like to hear from people and it's fun to have them receive lots of cards. People put a notice in the paper that they're having their 50th wedding anniversary or older birthday with an address to send cards to. We did a card shower for our grandfather's 85th birthday like that and he was thrilled to get cards from people he hadn't talked to in 30 years.

along the lines of petunia's suggestion:

my mom is turning 60 this year which is already a big birthday, but in chinese culture, 60 is a big big big year.

i'm sure something similar can be adapted for your folks? even if you don't get 50, it's been really wonderful to hear from folks that my mom has lost touch with, and it's completely changed my perspective of her from mom to an awesome, gregarious, quirky WOMAN.

if you don't get 50 you can always just put what you do get in a scrapbook like what loosey suggested!

Since we were limited on time, I didn't get to try all of the great ideas, but we did have a wonderful party! We brought their wedding album for everyone to see and they still had the topper from their wedding cake, so we used that as a center piece. We also used their wedding picture in an announcement in the newspaper and they were tickled to death about that!Also, my brother and his family weren't able to come from out of town, so they Skyped with us during the party, which was fun.I think they enjoyed it, even though we didn't go too overboard.Thanks for the suggestions!
