I am sewing more and would like to make my own dummy. I am petite but curvy and not every pattern in my size evenly fits my waist, bust and hips like it should.
I am thinking some of that craft store wire mesh wrapped securely around me for fit, take it off, then do either a magazine strip paper mache or those craft store plaster casting strips that you wet and they harden when they dry. I am not opposed to duct tape either. I like the most effective path of least resistance/expense.
Please tell me about making your own custom dummy. I have priced them on line and I do not have $100 to buy one.

There was a how-to in Bust magazine a few months back. I probably still have the issue laying around somewhere. If I can find it, I'd be happy to clip out that article and mail it to you.
Basically (if I remember right) the directions were to put on a tightly fitting shirt, have a friend wrap you with tape, and then cut yourself out of the shirt neatly and reassemble it carefully. |

That is exactly what I am thinking of doing so I guess this is not as hard as I imagined.

yes indeed, I've done this before with great results!
Just google "duct tape dummy" and you'll find lots of tutorials.
I filled mine up afterwards really tight with crumpled newspaper and that yellow insulation foam in a can ( the kind you would use to insulate pipes in a basement) and worked like a charm... A bit strange to have a double of yourself hanging out in your house though... |

Did you make your own dressmaking blank? I will say I've tried the duct-tape route, and that was fun and interesting....though mine was not very display-worthy.(It looked quite creepy in pictures, in fact.)So I was a little disappointed but then I did it all myself and it was useful for sizing a project. : )

I did this, but I think I taped it too hard (or my friend really) so my chest area got very flat, and kind of all of me looked wonky. So... if you're going to do this, maybe you should be wearing a sturdy bra. Just saying. I was bra-less, and after the taping, also boob-less. :)
