I don't use it for myself but I have paid a vendor using it and it was easy. _________________ Don't forget to be awesome.

Thanks for the replies. Actually, I should have added a link for anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about...

Also, I should mention that I don't have an Iphone, so it would involve extra expense. Are there any good alternatives out there that you know of, Glitter? |

it works with an Android as well, but I'm guessing you don't have a smartphone entirely?
Before Square came around, I'd either bring a netbook and accept payments via paypal (annoying) or depending on how busy the event was, I'd just only accept cash & direct people to my etsy shop for CC purchases.
You can also sign up with a merchant service & they can give you a manual swipey machine, but the risk is processing a card later that evening will inevitably wind up with a declined card and you will likely never see the person again. _________________ Etsy!

I've been considering caving in and finally getting a smartphone, and this is definitely one of the reasons why. I've been using ProPay for years, which has been fine, but it's a yearly contract fee, plus it's inconvenient to have to wait til I get home from shows to process the transactions (and as Chupacabra mentioned, there's always that risk of getting a card that's declined).
Am I missing something on their site about the fees or is it really only a percentage per swipe? And does anyone have anything negative they've experienced, even if it's just a small little gripe? Just want to make sure this isn't too good to be true ;) _________________ Rockin' Chainmail Jewelry!

Still no gripes from here, sorry :) _________________ Etsy!

Ive also been considering a smartphone, at least partially because I'm going to be signing up for craft shows later in the year, and I don't want to limit my possible sales because I can't process cards. I know as a customer at craft things I'm waaaayyyy grateful when I can pay with a card, because I'm terrible at remembering to get enough cash from the ATM. But in general I don't know if people come to such things expecting to be able to use the plastic.
(I've already been looking at various options for the past week..) _________________ etsy shop! recent works! Linus in Hats! |

well thanks to your feedback I am off to sign up for a new contract (yikes, committment!) and get the iphone.
Yes I didn't have a smartphone, though I was confusing these with my internet/data plan phone that does everything else.
I did have a blackberry till I killed it, and I still don't get why they can't do square or similar service for those. _________________ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Iris-Jewels/363290292190?ref=mf |

Can I slightly hijack the thread to ask if anyone has also used Intuit? I was talking to a friend about all this, and he had some practical reasons for recommending them over Square; however, he's never actually used either, so I'm not sure how much to actually trust that opinion! _________________ Rockin' Chainmail Jewelry!

Hey folks,
Thanks again for the answers. I just wanted to give a little heads up.
I did get the square, and an Iphone - it was just time. To be honest, I am still not sure if this or a smartphone is better for me, but that's another thread.
Overall, it's a useful thing to have but as a PSA to you, make sure you swipe rather than punch in the card numbers. My BF helps me and told me we don't need the card to run it. I didn't do my research and left it to him. It happened to be a large sale and the fee was very hefty - and it's more if you don't swipe.
Just thought I would remind you. _________________ Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Iris-Jewels/363290292190?ref=mf |

I was at a zine fest last weekend and it seemed like quite a few vendors were using square (mostly the bigger/medium sized vendors, not the tiny ones, but some tiny ones were). When I go to a craft or other sort of fest, I don't usually expect to be able to shop using a credit card, I actually sort of like taking out a bunch of cash from an atm and limiting myself to that, but I could see how it could be super useful to some people, especially in the case of items that cost a considerable amount.
Anyhow, just a little bump to say it seems to be taking off! _________________ i live at the foot of a mountain: some of my adventures |
