|
|
The longest I ever had my hair was in kindergarten in 1977. It was almost to my waist. I've never had it that long since.
I've had long hair almost all of my adult life. Sometimes I get crazy and cut it into a bob. Right now it's pretty long,, past my shoulders. I am trying to grow it out more, I think I would like to delve into longer hair again. It's long, dark brown and curly - not crazy curly but loose spirals and ringlets. I'd like to have it to the middle of my back.
I kind of debate with myself, wondering if super long hair is professional. I know a lot of women in my profession (social work) who have long hair. My boss has pretty long hair, but she usually keeps it up. I hate updos! They look great on other people but I don't like them on myself. It makes me feel like Little House On The Prairie.
So what about you? What's the longest you've ever had your hair? Do you hate long hair or are you a long hair person? What's the longest you'd like it? |

Mine was down to the top of my hips for a while. It was ridiculous, really - I always wore it up because it was too much of a pain to get it to look nice down (sounds like it is a bit like yours - dark, thick and curlyish - but mine has a strong tendency to frizz and the curls drop out easily). Random strangers used to come up to me and tug on my plaits, too, which made me want to murder them. (I never did, though.)
Now, it's above my shoulders. It was in a nice short bob, but I haven't had it cut for 6 months because I'm too skint, but I wouldn't let it get super long again. I like the way it looks short, but apart from that, the sheer hassle of dealing with it long is enough to put me off growing it. My longest was down to my waist. It looked really good when I blew it out. I won a makeover and cut it all off to a trendy flip and donated the hair to a wigs for kids program.
Right now, it's down to my bra line. I almost always wear it up b/c it gives me a headache if it's down - it falls in my face and I hate that. I'm likely to cut it off once the baby gets into the tugging on your hair phase. _________________ Everyone thinks I do it to make people stare, but really, it's to keep them from looking too closely. |

I recently cut my hair for the first time in 14 years - not much of a haircut, just lost the scraggly bits that fell to midthigh; now it's even at the bottom of my butt.
I pull back all or part of it for work (I'm in academia, so there is perhaps more tolerance of somewhat unconventional grooming choices), but wear it loose most of the time.
I don't find it to be a hassle, really - but then, mine's straight with a slight wave, which probably makes it easier to handle than curls. Sometimes I'm a bit envious of way people with short hair can change their look without it being that big of a deal, but I can't really see myself cutting it off anytime soon. |

Wow, Solstice, now I want to see photos of your hair!
The longest my hair has ever been is just a bit past my shoulders. Right now it's cheekbone-length, with an undercut, bangs, and a blue dye-job. :) _________________ "My power doesn't come from other people's lust for my awesome vagina, thanks." - Enzyme

November 2009, the night before getting about 18" cut off.
Then I let waited until December 2011 to get it cut again (16" that time). I'm just lazy. _________________ etsy shop! recent works! Linus in Hats! |

It was down to my butt in high school, and it looked pretty awful because I never trimmed it. Senior year I got my first pixie cut, and since then it's fluctuated between super short and shoulder length. Right now it's about chin length, and I'm growing it back to shoulder length. _________________ Gods of the Game |

Mine was down to my bottom at the end of 3rd form, then I got it cut to a chin-length assymetrical bob. So fashion forward for a 14 y.o!
In January mine had got past my bra strap, but I had about 3 inches trimmed off to tidy it up at the beginning of Feb. If it gets any longer than what it is at the moment, it starts getting hard for me to put it up into a French roll, which is my go-to do for tidyness, but most of the time I just put it up in a ponytail.
Because my hair is so fine and straight, growing it is literally the only way I have options. Shorter than shoulder-length and I can't even do a ponytail! |

Up until my senior year in high school, my hair was down to my waist. I cut it the summer before senior year, to shoulder-length; it was about 15" cut off. I wore it shoulder-length for a long time, and then after the Crumblette was born I gradually started wearing it shorter and shorter. Now I have a very short growing-out pixie. I haven't decided how long I'm going to let it grow but I do want a bit more length. My hair is very thick and coarse, with a tendency to wave.
I'm one of those people who finds long hair unprofessional on adult women, especially if it's unkempt long hair. Long hair says "young," and that doesn't tend to translate as "take me seriously" in a certain kind of professional setting. We have a judge here who wears her super long hair down over her shoulders even when she's on the bench, and it drives me bonkers. |

My dreadlocks got down to my waist before I cut them off. Before that I had slightly longer than shoulder length for many years. I have a big melon, and a lot of hair, but it's very fine, and it doesn't look good when it gets too long.
Since I chopped the locks off two years ago, it's been short short. Right now it's bleached platinum and in a "Robyn" cut.
As for length being professional looking or not, I think it depends entirely on the profession you're in. I work in creative environments, so nobody cares what my hair looks like and I can do whatever I want with it. Will I get elected to the board of directors? Possibly not, but I don't want that job anyway. |

The longest my hair has ever been is when I had extensions last summer (about 5 inches past my shoulders).
I actually wrote about the experience of having them here in a post called "is my hair unfeminist" and I bring it up because of the discussion of long hair being unprofessional.
Basically, to quote myself, here's what I think (in this case you can feel free to fill in the blank with the word "professional"):
| Quote: |
| I’m so tired of women’s hair as a politicized space, especially when it is politicized by other women. It’s a lose/lose situation when women silently or not-so-silently judge the appearance of other women and what their coifs signify: the players on both sides of the equation are never ____ enough. (Fill in the blank — feminist, natural, cool, pretty, feminine, butch, traditional, fertile, healthy, well-kempt, etc etc etc). |
ETA: I kinda forgot but that's my long hair in my avatar right after I got it done. My hair does NOT normally look that good!! _________________ <3 free range glitter pony <3

i grew up never having hair long enough to put up in a small ponytail or anything. total asian bowlcuts for years and years done by my dad in our garage. when i was old enough to have a say in my hair, i was shaving it and dyeing it and keeping it short but its only been in the last few years that i've had this desire for long hair.
i've been thinking about cutting it way short again recently but i think about how long it took me to have hair like this (25+ years then at least 12 months!) and it makes me want to keep it long... just for now. plus i'm growing out an undercut so .... _________________ THE MUNDANE IS TO BE CHERISHED |

My hair is usually about bra length, sometimes about Weezil length, and then 2 years later I'll get it cut again. Ha! I wear it up 90% of the time just so it doesnt get stuck in things or get in my way.
Yeah, I don't get the whole unprofessional thing. Your vibe and the way you speak says a lot more than your hair. _________________ Truth is, everybody is going to hurt you; you just gotta find the ones worth suffering for." -Bob Marley

I had it down to my butt as a kid, but it was always in braids. When I was about ten I got it cut off shoulder-length. I had shag cuts in shades of red and burgundy through high school, then cut it off very short (like a boy's) when I joined the military. For the last ten years or so it's gone back and forth between boy-short and shoulder-length, and for the last six I've dyed it black.
I've been half-heartedly trying to grow it out for a while, because I'd like it to be all luxurious and feminine, but it doesn't really do that. It's got a tiny bit of wave to it when it's short, but longer it just hangs there straight and damaged from the dye and I end up with it in a ponytail all the time because of my job being physical. Why oh why can't it be long and wavy and black? Sigh. **ennui** _________________ And it was messy, but we were drunk. Story of my life, I guess? --oohlala |
