I honestly pictured Peeta being smaller, like the dorky kid next door. I think Josh Hutcherson is a little too muscle-y for the role. I know he's supposed to be strong but I pictured Peeta being twig-like. _________________ Don't forget to be awesome.

Katniss and Gale and Prim looked a lot like the actors playing them, but Peeta was big. Tall and somewhat stocky and barrel chested.

Yeah, what is up with the incredible shortness of the actor playing Peeta??? I also find it amusing that IRL the actors playing the trio are basically total opposites of the physical coloring described for them in the books (i.e. Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth are both blondes, the guy playing Peeta is a brunette). Obviously, hair dye and makeup make this something of a non-issue, but it still makes me laugh. |
It is funny! I was shocked when I first saw Katniss, but then I saw the movie Winter's Bone (really good!) and it became easy to see why they chose her, even though she doesn't look very Katniess-y.
I agree with you about the shortness of the guy playing Peeta! The girls at the high school where I work at all seem to think he's the bee's knees though, so I guess that's why they picked him :)
I'm so excited about the movie! I love that there's been yet another wave of kiddos at the library frantically reading the books. Yay for kids reading! |

My other thought was I wondered how set up Katniss was to become the Mockingjay all long. Maybe Haysmitch was watching her and had the gamemaster put only Prim's name in the bowl, knowing Katniss would volunteer as tribute. Maybe that's me reading too much into it, though. |
So I just started re-reading the books and in the first few chapters there were a lot of references that made me think it was premeditated...from the mayor's daughter being really over eager for Katniss to wear the pin in the arena, to Cinna saying he specifically requested District 12, to having Peeta and Katniss hold hands at the opening and Haymitch saying something about how that's a nice little rebellion. Haymitch did seem genuinely surprised that Katniss seemed like a fighter though, so maybe it's just more literary foreshadowing? |

I wondered about this as I read it. Like, what's the deal with the pin? Does she know something?
Also, about the pin - and the movie... I've watched the trailers and previews, and it seems like they're leaving the mayor's daughter out. I'm maybe seeing it wrong, but I got the impression that Katniss already had the pin, or she gets it from Prim. I'm anxious to see if I'm totally off. |

Our new copies of The Hunger Games came in last week at my library & they have almost 150 holds. That's bananas!

I think it was because the pin belonged to Madge's aunt, Maysilee Donner, who died in the 50th games (the ones that Haymitch won), that's why Madge wanted Katniss to have it.
(It's possible I know these books a little TOO well to maintain any dignity.) |

Ooooh I never made that connection. Thanks! I've only read them once, and it was pretty quickly. |

I wanted to talk about the movie specifically, and I'd love to hear what people think once they see it too! _________________ Friends say it's nothing, but would would they know? The minute she walks in the room, she's the star of the show. |

I know it's YA, but would you give the trilogy to a girl turning 12? I really have no clue how "old" you are when you're 12 Up till like three months ago her room was super pink with a dollhouse and everything. Though, she's been using a lot of exclamation points and hearts on Facebook for forever. And I think she'd find Peeta pretty dreamy. _________________ the world is yours

I would, klaradetroit. I would've eaten these books up when I was 12. But keep in mind that this is a series about state-mandated teenage murder, so YMMV. _________________ Back in the '70s when disco & exorcisms were all the rage, he was the man. |
