You can pour it into a pan and go back in and mix it up every so often while it freezes, and/or put it in a blender or food processor before serving for "soft serve," but the constant stirring of the machine is what keeps big ice crystals from forming and makes it creamy in texture. I've seen a fair number of ice cream machines at yard sales and thrift shops, if price is what is holding you back.
Nothin' wrong with making ice pops instead! _________________ "I hate that they're giving tea a bad name. Tea is a peaceful, gentle drink." - Teahugger |

Yeah, I see them occasionally at thrift stores, too, but I'm always suspicious that they don't work. If I got one I'd rather have the KitchenAid mixer attachment, but I can't justify the cost or storage space for how often I eat ice cream.
But ice pops are a great idea! Thanks! _________________ http://twitter.com/sharkscanbiteme

I just used my food processor, but I think you could probably do it with a blender too.
It's pretty creamy anyway. |

I bought a second-hand icecream machine last week. Guess what I'm making today! |
