i'm looking for a sewing pattern/tutorial for a jacket that is also an overskirt - almost a tailcoat, but with more of skirt. i got the inspiration from the blue gauzy situation here, and googling didn't find too much - i think it's a terminology thing - but this is similar to what i'm picturing...

is this a thing?

I would suggest asking The Dreamstress. You can find her on FB too. (She is a personal friend of mine, and is G* extended family).

Ooh! IrmaVep's idea reminds me that I know someone who's both a big fan of dresses (A Dress A Day blog) and words (Wordnik founder and former Oxford English Dictionary author).

If IrmaVep's person doesn't have the answer, you should try Erin.

the dreamstress was super friendly and speedily helpful! she said:

It's not a very precise concept, so hasn't had one name over time. In the late 18th century it was called an open gown (because it was open and showed the petticoat underneath). The Victorian's borrowed an 18th century term for bustling/pickups, and called it a Polonaise. Most other era's would just have called it an overdress. That's what would be referred to in the pattern at the top of this post.

i bought the pattern she mentions there, this one. now to get fabric! i'm going to make the skirt a little more full in the back.

hopefully braving the snow will be the trickiest part!
