I think for a knit top like those, you could wear a cardigan, but maybe with a contrasting level of knit-ness. Like a really fine knit, or even a jersey fabric. Something sleeker and less bulky because yeah, it might be a little too much if both pieces were a bulkier knit.

I might be tempted to wear a long-sleeved t-shirt *under* one of those tops, rather than double up. But I love really over the top textiles, so I might also wear a big oversized bulky knit cardigan over that first shirt.
Actually, no, I probably would go with a denim or leather jacket. Anyway. _________________ "My power doesn't come from other people's lust for my awesome vagina, thanks." - Enzyme

As long as both are lightweight, I layer sweaters. Layers are crucial to living in this climate where people have a propensity to over heat and over cool buildings and where the temperature can range 40 degrees in a day.
New one: I'm going to a pirate themed 60th birthday party. I think I decided I just don't have the energy to fully dress up, hub I'm not sure which novelty brooch(es) I should wear. The giant pink and blue plastic parrots or the large white moonglow plastic sword? It's more of an Arabian-fairy tale type of sword, big and swoopy. I have much bigger problems than this, but this is the one weighing on me currently. _________________ country cookin' makes you good lookin'

I would wear the parrots to the side of my neckline, close to the shoulder, and the sword on my hip, around pocket level. You know, like, Pirate Casual. _________________ http://montgomeryfibrearts.wordpress.com/ |

I did think about that, but my style approach lately involves doing everything I can to avoid highlighting my midsection! I rigged the sword brooch onto a chain and made it a necklace!
Here are some photos of my skirt fabric from my first question:

No photo really quite captures the color correctly. It's really ugly, but in a way that is somehow charming. There's a photo of the finished skirt on the Picture Sunday thread. _________________ country cookin' makes you good lookin'

I have a pretty stupid set of fashion questionage.
I've got two weddings to go to this autumn, and since the weather at that time of year is so unpredictable (it's unlikely to be boiling hot, but it could be sunny and mild or it could be freezing and rainy and horrible), I kind of don't know what to wear. I need to buy new clothes for this. The only guest crossover is my partner, so I can easily wear exactly the same outfit for both occasions.
So.
What's a good thing to wear to an autumn wedding when you don't know what the temperature will be like?
Is there such a thing as a formal jacket that isn't worky-looking and that I don't hate?
Is it ok to wear quite a short dress to a wedding (with opaque tights)?
Also, related, how do I get my partner to buy and wear a suit? Ha. _________________ kittens are cute, but a full-grown cat can be cuter

1. Caro, all the jewelery all the time.
2. Caro, that fabric is amazing and in my zany fashion world, both that grey/brown and the yellow can be treated as neutrals. Pretty much anything will look great with it.
3. town hall - in my experience, no, with the jackets. Short dress, totally. You can wear wool tights or sheer ones based on the weather, probs. Your partner is a grown up & he can buy/wear whatever, but you don't need to worry about it. _________________ "My power doesn't come from other people's lust for my awesome vagina, thanks." - Enzyme

A dress that looks good with or without various layers so that you can add or subtract as needed depending on the weather or indoor air temps.
I don't know, and that's why I go with cardigans--splurge on a fun beaded one!
Yes. Completely.
I can't help you with the last issue. _________________ country cookin' makes you good lookin'

I think you're right about the no on jackets and yes on fancy cardigans. Just seems like a jacket would be warmer (though obv most of the time will be spent indoors). Glad to hear yeses on the short dress; it's easier to find ones I like and don't feel too old/ frumpy in.
I know B is a grown-up and can (and will, and always does) decide what to wear all by himself, but I do think the way he always looks so scruffy at formal events is kind of indicative of a certain kind of snobbery or.. entitlement or something, that is not one of my favourite traits of his. But yeah, not a lot I can do. _________________ kittens are cute, but a full-grown cat can be cuter

Re: cute, non-officey jackets...I think they exist, though they might be rare. I like these:
http://www.shopelroy.com/category/coats
Bracelet sleeves and tuxedo cuts don't read as office casual to me, and I think the right jacket would look quite lovely with a short dress and tights.
Regarding suits - I don't think my partner ever wore them until mad men. now he cleans up real nice, and I like it very much. But yeah, you can't really force it. |

RE: coats/jackets. I think going either a lot longer than usual businessy coats, or something shorter and more cropped would work. Or something with a feature that's a little different, for instance, I have a military-style jacket with kind of puffy shoulders that might be appropriate. I love jackets. I have too many. I wear them with everything. _________________ Love my fade, but Glitter is forever. LOOKY, UPDATED BLOG! |

i had to attend a fall wedding last year. The ceremony was outside in a park and weather kept changing all day from mild and sunny to cloudy and drizzly.
i wore this coat as my layer
http://sliceofstyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/hazel_3-4_sleeve_coat.jpg
it's cotton, lined, but not warm. and it couldn't be mistaken for office wear.
i wore it with an above the knee black long sleeve heavy silk dress, it had simple 60s sheath sort of look to it with very sheer black tights covered sparsely with tiny rhinestones, and plain very pointy black suede flats. _________________ You have the American dream!
