i will be in asheville teaching a conference this weekend and the boyfriend is coming with me.

we will be staying at the rennaisance downtown (paid for by GCI) and he is mainly interested in record stores. i would like to hear about maybe some great places to eat (i am already familiar with the laughing seed and rossettas or something like that) and maybe things walkabl to either the public library downtown or the rennaisance hotel.

any must sees?

and are there and good used vinyl record stores?

Mellow Mushroom is pretty good for pizza and stuff. I think it's a chain so it may not be that exciting if you have one nearby.

when i was there a few years ago the mister and i had a really good time wandering around downtown. there are lots of cute little shops. it is such a neat place. i really enjoyed it.

and we actually ate at that mellow mushroom. :)

although i live in swannanoa, its only about 10 minutes to downtown.

places to eat that are awesome:

rosettas (gotta say it 'cause my good friend and college roomate's sister and family own it) :)

sunny point cafe-the perfect spot for brunch. menus online. in west asheville, about 5-10 minutes away from the hotel, but worth the drive.

early girl eatery, located on wall street (same street as laughing seed) local, organic, fresh ingredients and southern recipes. yum on the pan roasted chicken and herb gravy!

bbq? try ed boudreaux's next to Barleys (Barleys is also a great pizza and taproom) they have like 15 sauces--all are slightly vinegar based.

some neat bars: Scully's, across the street and perpendicular to Mellow Mushroom, Hannah Flannigans, Broadways, Barleys

There are a ton of cool shops and art places to see. Just walking around town is fun.


Going to the Biltmore Estate, although pricey, is fun too.

Other than Salsa's, Mela, and Early Girl, I also recommend Jerusalem Garden. It's an interesting mix of Middle-Eastern cuisines with a great atmosphere. They have belly dancers and a room where you dine on the floor on huge pillows. I also like Everyday Gourmet for coffee.

My bf and I were there before Christmas and went to the Biltmore (which was great, but so pricey!) and then wandered around the town area near there. There's a nice yarn shop there.

I'm bumping this thread because Rattlesnake and I will be headed to Asheville for two quick days at the beginning of August. We're hoping to camp and be close to the mountains, but we still want to check out all of the offerings of the city. Does anyone know the best tent camping sites that are nearest to downtown?

We plan on visiting the breweries, pubs, etc. that make Asheville the 2009 Beer City USA (tied with Portland). Any other recommendations that haven't already been listed in this thread?

YUMMY!! yummier than old europe. in addition to fabulous truffles and brownies, they have beer and wine, beer floats!, delicious chocolate creme brulee, cakes, etc. delicious dessert.

try to make it out to pisgah brewery (about 15 minutes outside of the city, best on thursday afternoons) i love the pub ale mixed with a touch of raspberry lambic

Asheville is halfway between the town I'm moving from and the city I'm moving to in early December. So, as my sister did a few months ago, I'm going to be hanging around for a bit in Asheville! Yay!

And ladies, I will gladly plan my trip around Big Crafty Holiday at the Asheville Art Museum on Sunday December 6th.

I have some friends that live in/near Hickory, and my buddy is a brewer at Olde Hickory Brewery so I'll be spending some time with them too. I'm thinking, because I want to spend time in Hickory and in Asheville, that I'll just make it a whole weekend thang!

Another Asheville question. I thought I would ask here rather than start a new thread.

I will be honeymooning in Asheville over Thanksgiving from Nov 25th to the 28th. I have been there before so I know some of the normal things going on but are there any festivals or special events happening around those dates I should check out? Also, are there any cut your own Christmas tree or apple orchards around?
