hi guys,

in a temporary measure against endless spam i have made all new accounts register through me, rather than verify via email.

So i have to OK any and all new accounts.

the good news:
probably will stop new spam

the bad news:
there will be some lag time in the approval process for new accounts. and if you use a crazy non language name i will not approve your account.

any issues feel free to get in touch with me!

if you cant register you can always email me at h e l l o AT s u p e r n a t u r a l e DOT c o m.

please please let me know if this cuts down on the spam. because it is a big pain in the neck and if it doesnt work i dont want to bother with it.

Fantastic, you are awesome! I will make note of how much (if any) spam I delete and let you know.

Yay! I hope the board modifications work to decrease spam, so that you won't have to manually approve new users for much longer.

I just deleted one spam thread (the user had registered on the 23rd), but that's a huge improvement from before when I deleted threads from at least 5-6 different spammers daily (not sure of the exact number, but the PM where I have gathered names and IPs is over 30 names long, so...).

Thanks for taking the time to do this! Hopefully it resolves the spam issues.

I haven't seen any spam in the past few days! It could be that the mods are just taking care of it quickly, but it's still refreshing not to see it. Thanks for thinking of this registration step to help.

I haven't deleted any spam since the registration hold, because I haven't seen any. Yay!

I've deleted very little. Perhaps by one or two posters. I let Tsia know about it at the time. I haven't seen any since at least Tuesday. It really is amazing the difference this has made. Thanks Tsia!

no problem. it was simple. i just needed the time to do some research and see what recommendations were out there. sorry it took me so long!

my only concern here is that we our delaying registration for legitimate users.

does anyone want to volunteer to look at the memberlist daily and PM me if you see any legit accounts. i can only check once a day and i think i have gotten all the legit ones OKayed. but moving forward it would be great to have a little help with that as well. i know that knits is doing it too (she checks in at around 4 pm est) some extra daytime help couldnt hurt....

soon i am going to put into place a modification so that the memberlist is not public and zero posters are not shown on it. at that point i might reopen registration to be email validation and see what happens. if all hell breaks lose again then i'll close it up. at that point i may hit up some mods to help me manage the zero posters and validate accounts.

I will be willing to do the member list thing, at least for a while. Maybe it can be a rotating job among the mods?

I admit I've also been wanting to go through and delete the spammy users (the ones that are very obvious), but don't know how feasible it would be, or if the community would feel comfortable with someone having that power temporarily.

Good idea - I would be willing to check the memberlist as well, but I don't have the time to do it every day. Taking a few days each would be fine.

I've also thought about going through and deleting obvious spammers but like kattwalk mentioned it's not really straightforward since it would require admin privileges. (One option would be to grant temporary admin privileges to mods or a few of the mods [and/or other volunteers], like making a joint effort to clean up the memberlist during a week or so, with clear rules of course - eg only deleting users who have obvious spam links in their profile or whose usernames are something like "freev14gra". This would still require that the rest of Glitter allows some people to be admins for a short period of time, of course)

thank you guys! i am actually not uncomfortable with giving admin privs to people who have been modding here for a while and rotating it. i could really use the help.

i'd like to wait to do this until after i get the modification installed that will let administrators look at all the zero posters at once rather than doing them one account at a time- which is a nightmare on the back end. i would love to get rid of the bogus accounts too.

in the meantime anyone willing to take on actually looking at the memberlist once a day and pming me the real accounts let me know...

good news. we stuck on some more modifications to prevent spam accounts. i am waiting to see if they do any good. if they do then i will allow users to activate their own accounts vis email. if not then we will keep the boards like this.

OK, accounts can now be created and modified via your email verification. i am going to monitor for a week and see if we get any spammers.
