i know i'm not the only girly out there who has a really hard time coming up with crafted presents for boys.

perhaps we can get a thread going with some suggestions?

my suggestions:
- nintendo controller belt
- screenprinted shirts
- record bowls
- notebook for the artsy/emo type

i recently made my boyfriend a donnie darko shirt.

actually. he wasnt my boyfriend then, i like to think donnie darko had a hand in our relation ship... :wink:

it was a dark gray shirt with a donnie darko stencil on the front in black. its alittle difficult to see the black on the dark gray so it makes it kinda mysterious. then on the back it has a stencil of Frank. its in white so you cant miss it.
he wears it all the time :D

i think this is an excellect staple of a thread!

ive made my bf a duct tape wallet, knit him some cuffs, a scarf, man bag, made him a little notebook to write random thoughts in [he's a rockstar, see]... some things havent gone over as well as others, but i try to be really creative with things, so once he made a scrapbook of all things us, and even included interviews with our friends on what they thought of me... okay, off topic but sweet nonetheless....

i think you can mostly make the same kind of stuff, just boy style. my best friend is a boy and i've made him a bag for christmas and am going to make him some coasters as a housewarming present. i think things for the house are good because i find that boys like to have them but don't love to make them and usually don't think to buy them, like pillows, curtains, lampshades, etc... i think the only things that are really out in my book are flower pins and skirts, at least for most boys, heh.

I've found that my man actually wants soaps and lip balm. He always reminds me when his Citrus bodywash is running low....

But I've made him other things. I made a human heart out of sculpey that was partially gold-leafed and locked in an aluminum suitcase for Valentine's day. And I also made him a marionette once. It depends on the guy. I'm usually not the crafting-for-someone-who-I'm-sure-won't-appreciate-it type. For those, it's usually Borders gift certificates or movie passes. :(

I think HATS and SCARVES and FINGERLESS GLOVES are great for boys because

(A) They can really top off an outfit
---and who doesn't have that secret desire to gently make-over a nice deserving boy

(B) utlititarian
---in the right climate, obviously!

(C) the average dude would not be knitting himself these items
---though it might seem like not so special a present for a crafty like-minded individual, no need to apply that logic to the average non-knitting guy

one of my friends really likes nirvana, so i made him a "heart-shaped box" with snippets of lyrics and pictures of the band. another one of my friends adores alice in chains, so i made him a "man in the box" with lyrics and pictures too. other than that and a bunch of mix cd's and tapes, i haven't really crafted for boys very much.

For my 16 yr. old son: beanies, sock monkeys , treaure boxes, boxer shorts, pillowcases from cool fabric or band T's, PJ pants, wrist bands. These are crafty gifts that his friends have requested some for themselves after they saw them, so I must assume they are desireable!

For slightly older guys: afghans (college team colors in a non-lacy pattern like single crochet in random stripes) are surprisingly popular. Car rugs/pillows suitable for picnics and sports events, heat packs, hats, scarves, sock monkeys, map binders for the car, pillows for their somewhat underdressed sofas.

for Dad-type guys: Photo mousepads or mugs, sock monkeys (seriously - EVERYONE loves them, naked, goth, sporty, you name it), customized TV trays, PJ pants, heat packs, hats, scarves.

Guys seem to be picky about things not looking too "home made", but they love to have you setting aside time to make something just for them.

I've made my friendboy all his birthday/holiday/just-thinkin'-of-you gifts.

For his b-day I made him a monoprint and baked him a vegan pumpkin cheesecake. Boys love food.

For x-mas, I knitted him a scarf and made him a mixtape of country/alt-country tunes.

And I've given him tons of prints as gifts. He's an artist too so he really appreciates the gesture of me giving something I've made by hand.

I agree with Squeaky-Queen! The first gift i ever gave the mr. was soap. Men like to smell pretty too. He has also taken my peppermint body spray hostage;)
He is my rock star man, so i have knitted him a guitar strap and gig bag. He and most guys i know prefer functional gifts.

I made both of my sons bean bag chairs. They were a huge hit. I finally recovered them to match my living-room because they were never going to leave.

My son made my other son a chinese checker board. Any game board would work. You could make a chess set, or backgammom or Pente.

*duct tape wallet (which ended up getting supersticky, sadly)
*knitted a couple of scarves and a beanie
*made a dozen or so prints
*made lots of cookies and a homemade Valentine for V-day
*sewed a comforter cover and pillowcases out of vintage Mario/Zelda fabric for his Nintendo room
* latch-hooked a Nintendo racetrack logo rug

here is a list of things i have crafted for boys of various relationships to me (friends, dad, make-out partners)

a box to keep 45s in (decoupaged with archie comics)\
stenciled shirts
knit hats & scarves
knit mittens (i lined them with flannel & then made a little label for the inside)
funny stuffed toy thing from an old sweater of mine (he was a random shape, and i embroidered eyes on him & he smelled like me...so he was appreciated & so SO f'in cute it made me proud to give it as a gift)
leather cuffs

i'm embroidering pillow cases for friend boys this christmas.... and friend girls too....maybe....
