In one of my favourite cookbooks, The Breakfast Book by Marion Cunningham, it says:
"Cinnamon toast comes and goes in one's life, but it is always welcome as an old friend".
It's so true! I can go for months without eating cinnamon toast but then when I do it's just so familiar and comforting. I had a peanut butter sandwich today and it was just like that - I don't think I've had one in years but it was SO GOOD. Grilled cheese and tomato soup is like that for me also.
What are your "old friend" foods? |

Grilled cheese & tomato soup is my favorite meal...I eat it often!
Peanut butter and jelly, for sure.
Cereal. I hardly ever eat cereal, so cold or hot cereal is a nice old friend...Especially Cream of Wheat.
Ramen (which I'm weirdly eating right now!) _________________ http://revisedfortodayslifestyles.blogspot.com/ |

My mom's chop suey. It's total mid-50's Americanized chop suey (even more than "real" Chop Suey) but I love it. _________________ "Fun is where you find it" - jackierocket |

yes, tomato soup and grilled cheese! And chicken noodle soup.
And then some of my south african grandmother's staples: baked macaroni with ham and cheese (should not even be in the vicinity of anything that could be construed as a vegetable!), chicken pie, cornflake and coconut pudding with warm custard.
And my old Dutch friends: endives baked with ham, cheese and white sauce. Stewed eel with potatoes. "Stamppot rauwe andijvie" (no idea how to translate that, but it involves the trusty potato and ye ole' Wheel O' Gouda). Broodje kroket! With mustard!
And my "new old friends": cevapcici or pleskavica with lepinja and kajmak (meat, bread, cheese, basically). Goulash with gnocchi. Fresh sauerkraut with cumin seeds. Jabolcni pita (you would know this as apple strudel). _________________ The plural of anecdote is not data.

Oh man, goulash. Haven't had that in years!
And stroganoff!
Taco salad the way my mom makes it (which involves French dressing, sounds gross, but it's really good) _________________ http://revisedfortodayslifestyles.blogspot.com/ |

My family does that too. My mom has a giant bowl that is the Taco Salad Bowl.
We also have a Cool Whip salad that comes out at every family function and times when I'm feeling homesick. _________________ country cookin' makes you good lookin'

I'm glad to know we're not the only ones, caro!
Everytime somebody makes taco salad or I see it on a menu it's covered in salsa and sour cream. NO! That is WRONG! That's just a regular taco without a shell! _________________ http://revisedfortodayslifestyles.blogspot.com/ |

Another vote for grilled cheese and tomato soup!
Also, my husband already ate dinner, so I can have whatever I want. I realized that I could make an Elvis sandwich because he just bought some bananas and I got incredibly excited so that is what I'm going to do right now! |

| Killr thats just like my moms taco salad! Except we toss it with the dressing. We also have a taco salad bowl--its the same as the popcorn bowl. A big orange enamel bowl my mom got 30 years ago at some bodega in spanish harlem. Its definitely one of those things my sister and I fight over for custody. |

Pancakes. My Dad made the best pancakes.
And ditto on Ramen. Preferably mushroom flavor, with a can of Pennsylvania Dutch mushrooms dumped in. So gross, but so good. |
