Tommorrow I'm spending the day and overnight in Montreal. My friend and I are not interested in doing anything really but going out to eat and wandering around shopping. we're not really looking to do anything "smart" like museums this trip, I have not hung out with this friend in a long time so its just kind of an excuse to get away and be together.
I'd like to find Lush, any second hand stores, and other places that are crafty. Any ideas?
Finally, I've lived in Vermont 9 years and have never been, sheesh!

yay!! Montreal is fun to visit!! I KNOW you'd love this cafe called Santropol. Very hip/hippie/veggie friendly cafe with coffee, tea, sandwiches, etc.
Sadly that's the only thing I remember well, besides having a good time! |

oooh, i LOVE montreal! make sure you plan your day around eating...montreal has some of the most amazing restaurants i've ever been to.
my favourites:
cafe santropol---the best "killer tomato" and "northern lights" sandwiches! sometimes i want to make the 6 hr drive just to have one.
chu chai---completely vegetarian and absolutely scrumptious! a bit on the pricey side and probably don't want to wear grubbies there. but they have a cheaper "takeaway" next door called "chooch" and it is equally yummy! best fake meat kabobs ever!!!!
sorry, i don't live there so i don't know exact addresses (0r spellings for that matter!) but i think chuchai is somewhere on rue st. denis and santropol is on the corner of st.urbain and something....
have fun!!
ps. museum of contemporary art is great. (sort of near "old montreal" i think???) _________________ i have a little etsy shop

OK, I used to live there.
You might want to do a circuit St-Denis from Sherbrooke to Mont-Royal, west on Mont-Royal, and south on St-Laurent.
There's a Lush on St-Denis along that stretch (among other things). Mont-Royal has some used clothing and fabric shops. Then St-Laurent has used clothing, records, upscale boutiques like Space_fb, random stuff, etc etc etc.
Santropol http://www.santropol.com/ is on St-Urbain, which is two blocks west of St-Laurent, at Duluth. That's south of Mont-Royal. But I prefer Casa del Popolo, just north of Mont-Royal on St-Laurent. They have amazing veggie sandwiches and soups and things, and it's a bar with live music at night. http://www.casadelpopolo.com/
Is that confusing enough??
There's a LOT to see in this neighbourhood. Tonnes of restos and interesting shops, so you can't really go wrong. _________________ There's been massive trauma. Oh, and west of St-Laurent a little further north, on Bernard, is Elle Corazon: http://ellecorazon.org/ _________________ There's been massive trauma. We could, of course, try to save him, but it would be costly, difficult, and we'd have to send away from some special really tiny instruments. |

I went to Montreal 5 years ago and LOVED it. it is such a beautiful, cosmopolitan city. the nightlife was fun too - lots of great dancing and beautiful people without all the pretentiousness.
I'm jealous. I want to go to Montreal!
btw, we went the weekend of Oct 10thish, and it was snowing atop Mont Royal. at the bottom it was only raining, but when we got to the top - snowing!
just for fun, here is a pic of us in front of the strip club. looking at the photo, I am on the far right, not looking into the camera. oops. [and I really miss those boots I had on here]

Plonk gave excellent advice. That's the loop I recommend to people ... basically, start at St. Denis and Sherbrooke, go up (north), go left (west) on Mount-Royal, go left (south) on St Laurent, and stop at Sherbrooke again.
That's a full day of fun boutiques and stores and restaurants. Duluth is also a fun street to walk up and down - it intersects with St Laurent and St Denis about two blocks south of Mount Royal.
I also like Cafe Santropol for lunch. For supper I'd suggest Sala Rosa - it's on St Laurent in the "club espangol" just south of St. Joseph I think - you'd have to ask for directions. Great tapas and free flamenco show on Thursday nights.
My other favourite resto close to where we're sending you is Khyber Pass, which is East of St Denis on Duluth. It's afgani and bring your own wine and VERY VERY GOOD. there is also Academie, which is on the corner of St Denis and Duluth. Also bring your own wine. It's kind of Italian / French fusion.
I'd skip the old port if you are only there for two days ... _________________ Tsé qu'la vie est parsemée de p'tites misères
