| could you somehow come to a compromise? like maybe both just do whatever the hell you want and hope it somehow comes together? i personally like the idea of doing both styles in the same space, it might sound kind of crazy but i think it would look cool. if he absolutely can't do cluttery stuff, maybe you could compromise and somehow do an organized display of your knickknacks? |

So i've lived in my apartment (my very first one!!) since August, but there are still boxes, piles of stuff everywhere, almost no furniture, etc. We have almost nothing to show for living here for 2 months, which is lame. I live with my best friend Nick, and while we both share a love for anything 1930's-1950's, we somehow clash when it comes to how to decorate the walls.
He likes modern art, aka canvases splashed with paint, shitty posters, etc. I prefer art deco stencilling, picture frames of family+friends+pets, stuff like that. I love homey things, like lamps, string lights, bright colors, lots of pillows and throws, but he ABHORS knick-knacks, |
No real advice, and I will probably sound dumb, but I love the use of abhor. I learned that word from GRE studying by saying, "I abhore whores." |

I don't have any suggestions for your specific problem, but some of us are doing the "Cure" online course (free) on apartmenttherapy.com, using the book Apartment Therapy - I absolutely LOVE it.
Here is the thread. |

You'll have to work out a compromise of some sort. What if you "divided" rooms into sections? Say, you get one wall (and its associated furnishings) and he gets another? And made your bedroom into a bed/sitting room to indulge your cluttery decor yearnings? _________________ Many that live deserve death. And some die that deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. |

I agree to compromise on the art. Maybe you guys can sit down and plan out a "theme" for each room (setting up the style and the colors) and then find a way to make your stuff fits (for example, maybe you can fit in framed pictures of friends and family it they are framed and placed in a way that works with the rest of the room, printed in certain colors, framed in certain colors, etc). As for the clutter thing, I think you should be allowed to have some homey stuff (pillows and throws, etc) without having everything cluttered up. Also, there's ways to have cluttery things like pillows, throws, and knicknacks while still having them conform to a room's style with their colors or prints (or by using control in how many you have and where you place them).
My roommate and I have been in our new place since Sept. 1st and it's still not totally unpacked (close, but not enough to say that we're totally done). I feel hypocritical saying this (since I obviously haven't done it), but I think it could be helpful to set a date when things MUST be unpacked by.
Do you have your own room? Because you can turn that into a totally uncompromised "you" zone. I just rearranged my room (pictures on my flickr: [url]http://www.flickr.com/photos/laurasia/) and I love, love, love it! It's all me and I feel so comfortable in here now. |
