i apologize if this was just discussed (i have a feeling it was) but i can't find the thread. maybe it's because i can barely keep my eyes open....must sleep.

i've completely left this to the last minute but if anyone has any suggestions of fun & cheap things to do in nyc, i'd love to hear them. my hub and i are going tomorrow morning and while we have a few ideas, we could use more.

also vegetarian restaurant recommendations? i do know about foodswings and we'll definitely be going there!

also: fun crafty stores. i like knitting, beading, and just learning to sew. esp. love vintage beads/charms/ buttons. also love shopping at stores with handmade goodies + clothing by indie designers/artists.

ps: we're staying at 3rd & 40th street, i think....

thanks!

Last time we were there we ate at a veg restaurant called the Zen Palette. It was awesome! There is one by NYU, and one, uhhh ... somewhere else in manhattan.

I would grab a copy of Time Out NY. My friends and I always refer to it as the bible, it has been invaluable to me to finding out what's going on each week.
I second Zen Palette as a good choice, I also like this restaurant Gobo. If you want more choices I suggest looking at citysearch.com for vegetarian restaurants in the city.

have fun!

This place is not exclusively vegetarian, but has plenty of veggie options, and is a really cool place in a very beautiful park.

food (you could really just eat yr way through the city)
zen palate is really great and there are a bunch of locations:
http://www.zenpalate.com/locations.htm
most of the other places i love are downtown:
angelica kitchen (the best, best, best) (east village)
http://www.angelicakitchen.com/
wild ginger (chinatown)
http://lighthousenews.us/RESTAURANTS/wildginger/index.html
and it's right near built by wendy (not cheap, i know!)
red bamboo near washington square park
http://www.redbamboo-nyc.com/
also! at the park! the dosa man - he has a cart and he's all vegan and his dosas are fierce.

btw, you know that foodswings is in brooklyn, right? there's tons of stores near there, but the best is beacon's closet - vintage - on north 11th street in williamsburg. walking down bedford avenue can be fun but also slightly repellent.
right near foodswings is this Super Great trim store - i think it's called k trimming. it's also on grand street.

the entire garment district is amazing and you'll be pretty close by -

my personal faves are Daytona and Tinsel Trading. Daytona is cheaper and Tinsel is kinda luxe.

my bestest, favorite cheap thing to do in new york is go to the metropolitan museum. you can donate however much you want and it's enormous, fabulous, amazing. the museum of natural history (best in the country, i.m.h.o.) is also super amazing, and across the park, but expensive. walking around central park never bores me either, and that's free.

um...i could go on ad nauseum, so i must stop myself!
good luck, have wonderful adventures!

I'm not sure if this will be useful of overwhelming to you - but I've reviewed all my favorite spots on Yelp - I have running lists of yarn shops and bead shops I've been to... And I'm going to make on of veg/friendly restaurants, since I like those too. I don't go out to eat all that much though.

Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions, or if you think you're going to a certain paper store that I happen to work at :)
