|

I'm thinking that I might be interested in a knitting class this summer, but I have no idea where to start looking - I don't know of any yarn/craft stores around here because I've been working insane hours ALL year. Now that I'm maybe getting some free time, can anyone recommend a place?
I'm not a beginning knitter, but I'm not that good either. I've made, like, sweaters and shrugs and hats and things, but every attempt at lace I've ever made failed miserably. I'm interested in socks and lace and following charts and just general more advanced knitting skills. A group class might be fun. I also don't want to spend too much money.
There's a "learn to knit" group for free at Fort Hamilton library, I'm considering going to that but am thinking it'll be too simple.
Any advice? |

I know Purl (SoHo) and KnitNY (14th and 3rd?) both offer classes. I haven't explored Brooklyn enough yet to know where the places are out here, though I'm sure there are some.
I had a small (myself + 2 friends) knitting group going for a while, but we were all really busy so it kind of fell by the wayside. I'll let you know if it starts up again!
Oh! MAKE workshop (LES) offers classes too, and the lady who runs the place is pretty awesome, I talked to her for a while at Craftacular. _________________ Are you familiar with the old robot phrase "DOES NOT COMPUTE"? |

Ooh, thank you Aryn! I googled them all and it seems like KnitNY no longer has a website? I found links but none of them worked. And Purl's website just has two beginner classes. But I'm thrilled to know that they're there, I'll have to visit sometime soon! Maybe I can find something out if I actually go there.
There is a craft store on Coney Island Ave (I think), past where my daily rounds take me, but it seems more like a "little old lady" sort of craft store, from the outside at least. I should go anyway and check it out - there are some basic supplies I need, and I'm tired of doing all my shopping over the internet - I want to GO somewhere!
It's so sad, a combination of being busy, having moved here somewhat recently, and being lazy - I actually save a lot of my non-feasible-over-the-internet shopping for when I visit my parents upstate because then I can just go to Target, Jo-Anns. Michaels etc so easily and get everything at once without having to find out where it is or going there and finding out it sucks. Plus it seems like every store I go to here is super crowded, messy, and there's no staff around. Things are always in the wrong place so you don't know how much they cost, etc. It drives me nuts! |

I had to add: when I started googling the places you mentioned, Aryn, it brought me to Citysearch.com and I found some other places -

this one looks interesting and it says they have a lot of classes, plus it's in Brooklyn and seems easy to get to. |

http://www.roxyyarns.com/ - is that the one in coney island you mean? littlespacebug just posted about that one in her blog. that's sort of far away from me, but maybe it's good for you.
http://www.makeworkshop.com/ - they don't seem to be having any advanced knitting classes either.
let me think - one of my friends loves the point - http://www.thepointnyc.com/ in the west village but I've never been there.
and there's knitty city - http://www.knittycity.com/ which one of our own (lady yuck) works at, but that's all the way on the upper west side. I know they have classes there.
by the way - did you see my other thread about the party i'm having after renegade next saturday? you should totally come! _________________ Are you familiar with the old robot phrase "DOES NOT COMPUTE"? |

There's also http://www.brooklyngeneral.com/about.htm - that looks interesting too. I think the one I mentioned before is the Stitch and Stitch, which looks like it must be about a block away from Roxy Yarns, and I can get to them both easily on the Q.
I did see the party thread - but my parents, sister and her boyfriend are all visiting me that weekend. Unless they're all invited too! Just kidding. But thanks! |

I did post about the one on Coney Island Ave the other day! I didn't see the other store over there. Roxy Yarns is in Sew Materialistic. I didn't really check out the yarn section but it seemed sort of small. They were very nice in the store though and I found some awesome fabric. They have a really good fat quarter sale this week so I'm going back over there.
I'm on the Q line too! rahime where are you located? |

| I'm between Kings Highway and Avenue U, and I work down close to Sheepshead Bay station (I think...I walk or drive there, so I'm not sure. Ave Y-ish). I basically spend my whole life in that little square - I could probably count on my fingers the number of times I've been in Manhattan since moving here in September. I'm hoping to break out a little this summer, although I'll be working at a day camp. |
