im moving to kc. we are starting our driving "adventure" there on monday and i still dont have a place to live. my plans are go chill in a hotel for a few days while my mom and i apartment hunt like crazy.

i had a thread on here a while ago about kc but i cant find it now...

i hear westport is a cool place to live but other than that i dont know much. im not going to have a car and i hear that the bus sucks which is discouraging but oh well. i need to be able to get to work (16 hundred something broadway) so maybe ill buy a bike.

anyone have any advice to give?

Check out the Architects!!! They are a band from Kansas City and they are in-freakin-credible (not to mention, some of my best friends in the WORLD)! I know that the brick is a good place to go.... assuming that you are of legal drinking age. If not, just look for the Architects. There can't possibly be any cooler cats in town, They'll steer you in the right direction.

um... lots of streets don't have street signs. Or maybe they're just wierd KC street signs that out of town people can't see. I've been lost there a few times, trying to figure it out, "What street are we on?" "I don't know." "Well what's that cross street?" No sign there either. "Well where the hell are we?" "Uhh.. Kansas City. I dunno."

Also, the cops will not pull you over for swigging on a 32 oz. can of beer while driving the wrong way down a one-way street. I mean, that's just what I've heard, not that I have any experience.

Sorry that's all I know about KC.

GIve craigslist a try!

Other than that, no advice. But my brother lives in KC. I only visited once, but I really liked it. Missouri has some great seasons. (you know, winter, fall, spring. We lack those in Austin!)

You forgot summer! Well, I guess you get plenty of that in Austin...

Missouri is a really beautiful state. Again, I have little to add about KC but after you are settled you HAVE to get out and see the rest of the state, it's so nice. If you're into camping, hiking, nature, this is the place to be, even if you're not way out in the country it is quite pretty. Driving through rural northern Missouri sometimes reminds me of how I imagined the Shire the first time I read Lord of the Rings. Seriously.

The Architects that used to be the Gadjits =) I used to listen to them on the radio in high school, but I don't think I ever saw them play in Lawrence (50 minutes from KC, Kansas...a little farther from KC. Mo) I wish I would've though

I feel like since I grew up in the next town over, I should be able to help you more with your questions...but I know all the fun/important things in KC are on the Missouri side, Royal's games, the Plaza, Worlds of Fun amusement park, the airport...I know a little more about the Kansas side...Olathe and Overland Park...but without a car, it'd be a little hard to commute...

wish I could help more. but good luck with the move! Enjoy Kansas City!!

Vikarious had a thread about bikes recently, several people posted about their own bikes there. I'll search and link itif it's still around.

What are you going to use the bike for? commuting? everyday transportation? or just some fun? I hear KC is a pretty bike-friendly town.

so.....i made it ok. i got an apartment. an apartment that i LOVE i should say. im living downtown in a loft.

thanks for the advice everyone
it looks like the architects are playing soon....ill have to see if its all ages or not. what kind of music are they?

party thanks for the bike links. ill have to check them out later (im at the library cause i dont have internet yet and im hungry so i needs to get home soon!)

as far as what i want.....i guess "everyday transportation" is the best answer. i want to ride to work (its like a 15 minute walk currently) and maybe venture around farther. i havent had a bike since i was like 12 though, so im not sure if i am all that comfortable riding downtown withlots of cars and all.

oh and i totally agree about the streets not being labled well. they also like to change the street a lot. like broadway turns into a million things that arent broadway.

are there any cool shops, thrift stores, record stores, etc that i should know about (keep in mind that i dont have a car)
