| We get a weekly organic fruit and veg box delivery, and over the last few weeks we've had more oranges than we know what to do with. They are delicious and juicy, but we just won't get around to eating them all as they are. So I've come scrounging for suggestions. If you had a huge bowlful of oranges sitting around, what would you do with them apart from juice or marmalade? (Although a nice easy marmalade recipe would be good if anyone has one!) |

Oranges are really tasty to put in a salad, especially if you put some chili in there too, together with whatever kind of other veggies you like. Or in said salad with some couscous or other grain-type filler.
Or make ice-cream! Sooo tasty! :)

I found this recipe on epicurious.com, and although I've been dying to try it - I haven't really had the chance.
It sounds fantastic though
-----
ORANGE CUCUMBER SALAD WITH SUN-DRIED TOMATO DRESSING
Active time: 15 min Start to finish: 20 min
2 navel oranges
1 (4-inch) piece seedless cucumber (usually plastic-wrapped), thinly sliced crosswise
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon cider vinegar
1 tablespoon mild honey
1 tablespoon finely chopped drained oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon ground cumin
Pinch of cayenne
Cut peel, including all white pith, from oranges and cut oranges crosswise into 1/4-inch slices.
Scatter orange slices and cucumbers on a platter.
Whisk together remaining ingredients in a bowl until combined, then pour over orange slices and cucumbers.
Makes 4 servings. |

Juggling!
I don't know that much fun that can be had with the fruit (although the above posters had some great recipes), but you can always candy the rind. Or scoop out the flesh and used the shells for pretty presentation of ice cream, sorbet or my favorite, jello.
I always love making the bases of dressings and marinades with the juice/skin. Mixed with a little garlic, soy sauce and seasonings, it's really good and can be used on a ton of stuff. _________________ Sew Damn Glad. |

There's a recipe in the new cooking light that's something like Sweet Orange Salmon. If you're interested, I can get it for you. _________________ It felt like a winter machine that you go through and then you catch your breath and winter starts again and everyone else is springbound. -- D. Oh another thing came to my mind:
Quorn, oranges and rice! Or use chicken instead of quorn if you prefer.. Basically fry the quorn/chicken until done, in some oil/butter. Put some spice on, perhaps salt, pepper, chili etc, whatever you prefer, put on some cream/half and half/soy cream, squeeze in some orange juice and some of the zest. It can get a bit flat so sometimes I add a bit lemon juice to it too, but nontheless it tastes nice :) Serve with plain rice, or with risotto (though that can get a bit too rich together with the quorn and the sauce) or with spaghetti/pasta.

Not exactly a recipe with oranges, but this was one of our favorite projects at my Granny's house. We did it at Christmas but you can do it anytime.
Take the orange, and poke holes in the peel with a toothpick. You can make them in any design you want. Then, put a whole clove in each hole. You can either hang these up with ribbon, or put them in a bowl as a centerpiece- they smell WONDERFUL and look pretty. _________________ Don't forget to be awesome.

orange carrot salad: grate carrots, add orange sections cut from the membranes and squeeze the membranes to get all the juice into the salad. Add some honey, and whatever spices/seasonings you might want, and stir it up and chill for a little bit. We often add golden raisins and cardamom, or cinnamom. We always have this in the fridge in the summer -- a great snack when a craving for something sweet hits. _________________ All I ate was spearmint candy

I second this idea. They're called pomander balls, and they do indeed smell great when sprinkled with cinnamon too. |

| Thanks for all the suggestions! I tried the oranges in couscous thing last night - a hot dish (still too cold for salad here!) but it worked really well. And I might try the pomander thing too - if you were to hang it with a ribbon, how would you string the ribbon through the orange? |

| dolly - you can tie the ribbon around the orange in a kind of criss-cross fashion before you start putting the cloves in. |

Well, I'm a college student so....
1. Get some small, sweet oranges.
2. Get one of those "flavor injector" syringe things that you use for chicken, or to fill jelly donuts. Load the syringe-y thing up with Vodka.
you know what's coming...
3. Squirt the vodka into the orange.
4. Stick it in the freezer for a few hours.
5. Carefully peel off like 1/4 of the rind, take a bite, and suck out the vodka & juice. Peel off more rind as you go. Messy, impractical, but fun to try. |
