ok girls, and boys.
i want your best smoothies recipes, i figure i'm not getting enough calcium at all, well i would be if i was on my own, but i think baby is zapping me empty!

ive heard of some soothies with bran flakes and other stuff in them, and i will eat basically anything at all. so i guess the more packed with goodness that can be in them the better. i've never made a smoothie before, i've only been a milkshake person - and in the milkshakes i would put milk, chocolate ice cream, the instant breakfasts, and a raw egg, ohhh yeah yeah i know raw egg thats bad! so please help me out!

also can smoothies be made and then sit in the fridge until morning? or do you have to make them fresh, when you want to drink them? and do they travel well? like would i be able to make one in the morning and bring it with me to work or lunch or supper?

so bring them smoothie recipes on!

smoothies are best fresh. Some of the will separate or curdle if you store them in the fridge.

I'm big on adding whole fruit and yogurt, maybe some juice for a smoothie. I also like using my juicer to make a really thick pineapple juice, then blend it with sherbet and mint.

Bran and wheat germ are good in smoothies, but they do mess up the color and texture a bit, IMO.

im not worried about the look of them, i just want them to be packed with calcium and extra goodness.

umm yeah i didnt think about the cruddling factor, i guess that would happen if cictus fruits were added.

this is how i make a simple smoothie:

1 scoop protein powder
1 banana (best if you peel, break into pieces and freeze in tupperware first)
frozen fruit (strawberries, blackberries, whatever you like...)
plain yogurt
a bit of milk or soy milk
plain uncooked oats
a drop of honey

you'll have to play with the proportions. i don't usually measure so i can't tell you measurements.

the oatmeal is optional, but it adds some bulk to keep you full and some fiber. you'll need to blend it for a while so you don't get oatmeal in your teeth when you drink it.

i've never tried storing one. i usually make them and drink them in the car in the mornings.

My surefire faves are these:

vanilla yogurt + frozen raspberries + a bit of lemonade.

any kind of frozen fruit is good thrown in there...

Though there's not alot to it calcium wise, I also really like:

pink grapefruit juice + frozen strawberries + bananas
(this one is super tart, but yum yummy and very energizing. )

I've always been a fan of frozen banana + peanut butter + chocolate syrup. I think the wheat germ would need to be used sparingly. I have frozen leftover smoothie in the past and it does ok. Not as good as fresh, but not bad.

i put in strawberry yogurt, a banana, some milk, and some wheat germ, and blended it all up, then tasted it, BLECH! it tasted nasty, added some more milk and another banana, tasted again still gross, couldnt finish my glass.

i think i will just use the wheat germ in baking.

I second the frozen banana suggestion; that's what I always use, plus some soy milk (fortified with calcium), and sometimes some other fruit or some peanut butter. And cinnamon!! They're so good and don't need any extra sugar.

If you're looking to add extra 'goodness,' when I have some, I throw in a spoonful of ground flax seed. You can buy it ground, or get it whole and grind it yourself. It doesn't really affect the taste noticeably -- I'd just add more cinnamon if it did.

I love wheat germ! I put it and whole flax seeds in my smoothies, I like 'em chunky.

My smoothies:
1 banana
about 1/4 cup frozen orange juice concentrate
1 6 oz plain nonfat yogurt
4 frozen strawberries
handful each of frozen blueberries, mixed berries, and cranberries
about 2 tbsp each wheat germ and flax seeds
water

Blend it up and suck it down! I used to sweeten with honey but now I try not to eat sugars, but it might help it go down easier if you're used to sweets. This will keep in the fridge for a day or two, just store it in the blender container and whir it around for a few seconds before drinking later servings.

I've been doing:

1 banana
1 cup vanilla soy milk
5 frozen strawberries

lately. I'm also a big fan of banana, peanut butter, maple syrup, milk, yoghurt.

ohhhh man... i love smoothies so much my mom got me a blender for christmas one time. any ways.....
my fav recipe would have to be my peach smoothy... it is good for you, but not in the going-out-of-its-way-to-be-healthy style.
you get frozen peaches (and strawberrys if you want) and blend them up with some yogurt and orange juice. its really simple, but its SOOOO GOOD!!!! and you can do whatever kind of fruit you want, with dfferent kinds of yogurt and whatnot... its all good....i think i have to go make one now!

oh yeah.... and a smoothie might keep till lunchtime if you packed it in a hot/cold thermos.... worth a try i guess.

I throw in some non-fat dry milk powder for extra calcium. The stuff is gross, but I don't notice it in my milk or yogurt-and-fruit smoothies. Extra honey or syrup for some sweetness...

I haven't been able to make any at home lately because I broke my blender...the screwy-in part cracked and it just leaks all over the place....but if I could, I would make:

fav: (ok, so it's a milkshake)
coffee ice cream
banana
chocolate syrup

smoothie:
banana
carrot juice
strawberries
pineapple

--whenever you use orange juice in your smoothies try calcium fortified oj or add some yogurt.

They also have these "carnation instant breakfast" packs of flavored powders that you mix with milk to make a drink. They're basically fortified liquid mixes, but they work extremely well in smoothies. Plus, they have vitamins and calcium in them.
