Indie Shopping Haul!

Indie Shopping Haul!

I was at Urban Craft Uprising last weekend in Seattle, and one of the best parts about indie craft markets (after the DIY love, seeing friends and making news ones) is the shopping. I, uh, kinda went crazy this time and posted everything that I bought and bartered for on flickr. Urban Craft Uprising Glut of Handmade Goods.

The Uniform Project

The Uniform Project

The Uniform Project is a fund raising fashion project by Sheena Matheiken in support of Akanksha (an NPO whose mission is to provide education for India's thousands of impoverished children). Matheiken had a dress designed that she could wear in different ways every day for a year, as a riff on the public school uniforms she wore as a teenager in India and to help raise awareness the power of creativity to disrupt the unsustainable nature of fashion.

Waxing Poetic

Waxing Poetic

Javanese batik makers are refusing to copyright their designs as thier work is God working through them. Copyrights are confusing- I know Victor Papenak didn't believe in them as he wants production to be hyper local. Copyrights are all that is keeping my royalties coming in. I guess God only sometimes works through me. Thanks BoingBoing

Generation-T

Generation-T

I'm gonna give it to you straight: I was not in the mood for crafting last night. I wanted to see my friend Megan Nicolay, who was in town promoting her new book, Generation T: 120 New Ways to Fashion a T-Shirt. You know, grab a drink, gab with a crafty friend. But, I was there for her demo, and within minutes, I was a total t-shirt deconstruction devotée. Megan's ideas are so incredibly simple and inspiring that I transformed one of my old t-shirts first thing this morning (it took two cuts of the scissors) and now I'm wearing a t-shirt that was languishing at the bottom of my dresser drawer like it's my new favorite top. Because, it is! Megan's on a 10-city tour, so be sure to see where she goes next!

I'm Crushing on Cosa Verde

I'm Crushing on Cosa Verde

I’ve been wishing for an online marketplace specializing in eco-friendly products. It’s as if Liz and Jeff of Cosa Verde answered my mental pleas. Their new, beautifully designed gallery connects 120 indie makers with environmentally conscious shoppers. Sellers’ wares are screened and must fit into at least one “green” category, such as organic, repurposed, or cruelty-free. That's a refreshing dose of transparency in a green-washed world!

Check out my full review on the Re-Construct DVD blog.
