Fab Prefabs at MoMA

Fab Prefabs at MoMA

You have one more month to catch the amazing exhibit "Home Delivery: Fabricating the Modern Dwelling" at the MoMA. I live in a 1949 prefabricated steel Lustron home, so seeing my same model assembled inside the museum was a must. This show is relevant to everyone, though, in the most intimate way. Through six full-size homes, architectural models, drawings, and films, the curators demonstrate how, since the 1830s, factory-built homes have been shaping our future.

Art Subscriptions

Art Subscriptions

Art collecting feels out of reach for most of the folks I know (artist themselves who don't have a lot of extra cash to play with) but there are a couple of exciting Bay Area efforts that make art objects accessible through the production of multiples. The Thing and The Present Group both work with individual artists to create editions available quarterly to subscribers. The Present Group projects range from books and prints to DVD's and sculptural objects made in limited editions. The Thing subscription is always some kind of manufactured everyday object incorporating text. Both offer a chance to support art production in a way that is both adventurous and affordable.

Geo Metric

Geo Metric

I have just found out about Ruth Laskey's work. Leslie knew how much I would love rigorous hand weaving with fierce geometry or oil paint. I can't make direct links, but click on Twill and Tapestry and find my mind blown. Ruth is having a show in Vienna at Songsong.

DIY computer games? BEEP BEEP!

DIY computer games? BEEP BEEP!

I just read an article in New Scientist about software MIT has developed called Scratch. It is based on how Legos are a intuitive building system and allows kids to make their own games. The developers are worried that we will become a culture dependent on computers but only able to chat and ..er.. blog. The projects on the site are awesome- Princess Dolphin has contests where kids make anime people, then she puts them in chapter plays. Scratchgirl27's project lets you Build a Robot. Don't forget to love it!

Special Topics in Calamity Business - Free Marketing Tips!

Special Topics in Calamity Business - Free Marketing Tips!

I debuted a new feature today on the Indie Fixx Guest Blog called Special Topics in Calamity Business.

Periodically, I will be asking successful indie entrepreneurs to share some tips & tricks with readers on how to run an indie business. When starting any new endeavor it’s important to remember to not reinvent the wheel, but find mentors and other informational sources to help you with those things that others have already figured out. To that end, Jennifer Perkins of Naughty Secretary Club shares some advice on free marketing opportunities.

If you run an indie biz and would like to share some tips for Special Topics in Calamity Business just shoot me an email.
