F.A.T. or Friday after Thanksgiving, can only mean one thing in Boston: The Chain Reaction at M.I.T.
Arthur Ganson, artist and inventor, has staged this event at M.I.T. since 1999, so that people had something to do besides shop. Teams of families and friends build individual tabletop chain reactions which then get hooked up to a whole gym full of other chain reactions and then they're set in motion, which leads to another chain reaction...
Usually these contraptions are quite elaborate, involving spinning Barbies, rolling jars of honey, Lego ramps and falling marbles, balloons inflating to cause a weight to drop, causing a rabbit to amble down an incline...
A huge crowd watches with anticipation to see what will unfold next, and there's wild laughter and cheering when the end of one chain reaction meets the beginning of another.
If you'll be in Boston, teams can register online by Nov. 19 and the event is open (there is admission fee) to anyone who wants to watch. Friday, Nov. 25, 1-4PM at Rockwell Cage Gymnasium (M.I.T.).
