Fun times in Chelsea this weekend!

This Saturday, October 15, Providence arts collective Paper Rad will be signing copies of their book, Paper Rad, B.J. & da Dogs at Printed Matter (535 W. 22nd St. NYC) from 5 to 7 pm. The signing will be immediately followed by a night of performances at Electronic Arts Intermix two floors up (535 W. 22nd St., 5th floor, NYC) from 7 to 10 pm. Paper Rad will be performing music, showing videos, dancing, and manning the wheels of steel. Free admittance and Free Red Stripe beer all night long.

Helsinki's museum of modern art has set up an open crafting space, which is part of an exhibition about urban and street art. A museum visitor may use vintage fabrics, buttons, ribbons, needles, sewing machines, badge-making machines, etc. for free. There is also guidance for designing, sewing, and screen printing. "Museums can be more than just the memory of a nation, they can be centres of civic action in an increasingly ahistorical world", says Virve Sutinen, the curator of Kiasma.

Rollyo is a site that lets you create your own mini search engine. First, you compile a list of those websites you refer to all the time. Then, Rollyo saves these for you, and you can search this group of sites anytime. Cuts waaay down on irrelevant search results. Imagine this use: what if you compiled a list of all your favorite crafting sites -- SuperNaturale, Craftster, Get Crafty, et al? How great would it be to search all those sites at once the next time you're looking for advice on circular knitting needles or cotton pipecleaners? Sweet!

Well, they've been DIY'ing it since 1996 and I was proud to drop a chunk of change in their shop the other day. Owners Ethel and Rome comb estate sales, yard sales, and the like for all kinds of creative bits. A visit to their shop is a glorious crafty treasure hunt through vintage fabrics, notions, beads, knitting and crochet patterns, yarn, baubles, and more. Run! Do not walk . . . .
