I've always said crochet is extremely sculptural.
It turns out that an effective way to understand the crenellation of lettuce leaves or the shape of the cosmos is through crochet! If your in the NYC area on Sat Feb 5th, 5pm there is a talk co-organized by Cabinet magazine and the Institute for Figuring (Los Angeles) called Crocheting the Hyperbolic Plane. Sounds like I found my people. For details go to http://www.cabinetmagazine.org/events/crocheting.php
If you live in San Francisco, have a friend who does, or will be visiting in the near future, you should know about Mundane Journeys. Artist Kate Pocrass, along with illustrator Patrick J Kavanagh, has put together a beautiful little book full of everyday adventures to be had in various SF neighborhoods. For more info check out www.mundanehourneys.com.
Sat Feb 19, 2 pm *Dumpster Diving 301* Building Materials Reuse Workshop
$20 (all proceeds go to Green Workers Cooperative, which will open a reuse center in the South Bronx next year)
If you're a designer who's always done a little salvage on the side and wondered how to incorporate your street scores into your work, this workshop will give you ideas on how. Everyone knows you can make a lamp out of anything, but we'll look at lots of other stuff: classic doorways, tin ceilings, street barriers, and more. You'll get unique materials and original designs, and you'll help make a dent in the amount of construction waste - 40 percent! - in local landfills.
Pre register by emailing Kim at classes@madagascarinstitute.com.
Who knew you could build your own? I encourage all you ecocrafty types, at least those who don't live in studio apartments in the big city, to give it a try.
Dear, hold your head a little more...(level earrings)
Now, I can tell you're getting palpitations over him...(thermometer necklace)
If you get lost, just point toward home...(compass ring)
This is a good time of year to clean house, clear clutter, make a budget, etc. This Kraftwerk (sp?) calculator will surely help.
Here is a picture of a knit penis. Enough said.
Are you trying to learn to knit? Are the illustrations in books just not cutting it? Are your stitch and bitch buddies getting sick of showing how to cast on over and over again? Thanks to Amy at http://knittinghelp.com/ you can just sit in front of your computer and watch these awesome little videos she made showing you how to do everything from casting on to basic knitting and purling all the way to circular knitting and decorative stitches and button holes and more!
