Bake-Off in Brooklyn!

Bake-Off in Brooklyn!

October 10th is the City Reliquary's 1st Annual Havemeyer Sugar Sweets Festival! It will feature baked goods, baking presentations, music and performances. It is also a fund-raising event for the Reliquary, which is a really cool organization. They are looking for Civic Bakers to donate fresh baked yummies for the bake sale. If you'd like to contribute your own fresh baked treat, email Jeff at jtancil@yahoo.com. The event itself will be on Saturday, October 10th, noon to 6pm, in Williamsburg on Havemeyer between Grand and Metropolitan.

Sweater to Rug Scale Freakout

Sweater to Rug Scale Freakout

I heart Aran sweaters. Never would knit one of course, because I can't even purl, so when I saw this super scale freakout, I was floored. Giant knitting needles? Weaving that looks like knitting? How? Never mind, I'm just glad it exists.

Toys and crafts at Smithsonian

Toys and crafts at Smithsonian

Work has been taking me to DC a lot lately. The only perk that I can think of, is that the client is the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum. So I've been getting to poke around the museum more than I normally would. Here are two photos I took this week of toys from Africa and a matchstick rendition of a Black Star Line ship made from matchsticks.

Fashion is Political (Again)

Fashion is Political (Again)

The Museum at FIT keeps up it's tradition of awesome shows with two that are up now. Upstairs is Fashion & Politics which is a bad ass survey of Political fashion from the 1700's until now. It's Heroic. Downstairs is a show of Isabela Toldeo. I knew she is elegant, but it turns out she is subversive- with clothes that sincerely address sexuality and otherness with deep beauty. AND you get to see Michelle's dress!

Felt Moby!

Felt Moby!

Tristin Lowe has created a life size industrial felt sperm whale that is on view at The Fabric Workshop in Philadelphia. Whales have a power that is amazingly expressed in the sculpture of wool over an inflated body.

No Woman, No Tweet

No Woman, No Tweet

There's an interesting article in the NYT from yesterday about people hosting parties with a "no blogging" "no tweeting" policy so that everyone can dance around drunkenly with lampshades on their heads without worrying it will be tagged on facebook the next day. Actually, it addresses more subtle concerns about privacy, people feeling comfortable about socializing in the present without fear of it being chronicled online by others, and the idea of the internet as the "new paparazzi" where everyone is a celebrity. Urban Plant Research In Residence

Urban Plant Research In Residence

The Urban Plant Research duo, Sara Bouchard and Leslie Kuo, are dedicated to investigating the lives of plants in urban areas. They are doing a show in Brooklyn that opens on Aug. 15 at 7pm and a "nature walk" of vacant lots, weeds and tiny parks in South Slope on Aug. 22 at 6pm. They are turning the Open Source Gallery into a center about urban nature for their show. Dont miss it(251 17th Street, South Slope, Brooklyn).

Design Within Reach

Design Within Reach

Chado by Ralph Rucci is a stunning fashion line that, for me, epitomizes couture with fine attention to detail and mind boggling small piece work. It seems he has made a series of vogue patterns! Home sewing ya'all!
