Fashion is Political (Again)
The Museum at FIT keeps up it's tradition of awesome shows with two that are up now. Upstairs is Fashion & Politics which is a bad ass survey of Political fashion from the 1700's until now. It's Heroic. Downstairs is a show of Isabela Toldeo. I knew she is elegant, but it turns out she is subversive- with clothes that sincerely address sexuality and otherness with deep beauty. AND you get to see Michelle's dress!> Scott on 08/26/09 #
Felt Moby!
Tristin Lowe has created a life size industrial felt sperm whale that is on view at The Fabric Workshop in Philadelphia. Whales have a power that is amazingly expressed in the sculpture of wool over an inflated body.> Scott on 08/24/09 #
Design Within Reach
Chado by Ralph Rucci is a stunning fashion line that, for me, epitomizes couture with fine attention to detail and mind boggling small piece work. It seems he has made a series of vogue patterns! Home sewing ya'all!> Scott on 08/07/09 #
Balloon Animals
I don't have any context for these balloon creations- but they are AWESOME. Ahhh, the Lady Bunny- thank you> Scott on 07/29/09 #
Waxing Poetic
Javanese batik makers are refusing to copyright their designs as thier work is God working through them. Copyrights are confusing- I know Victor Papenak didn't believe in them as he wants production to be hyper local. Copyrights are all that is keeping my royalties coming in. I guess God only sometimes works through me. Thanks BoingBoing> Scott on 07/14/09 #
Sine of the Times
Rueben Margolis makes stunning segmented moving sculptures. Thank you Ms. Dyne.> Scott on 06/19/09 #
Dollar Dollar Bill Ya'all
Mark Wagner makes collages out of actual US currency. I really like the sea life and the pie chart. I suppose this hits a chord like Monopoly becoming a hit in the 30's or other ways that Cash Rules Everything Around Me. I saw these in Harper's, where liberals shop for culture.> Scott on 04/05/09 #
Words to Live By
I adore this Get Excited and Make Things version of the UK WWII home front poster. Thanks BoingBoing> Scott on 03/19/09 #
The History or Crochet
OK, A history of crochet. These 7 Belgian instructional panels from the 1950's sure would compliment any interior. They're good Punk Fui, right Tsia?> Scott on 02/28/09 #
Brigid Berlin's Needlepoint
Brigid Berlin is a New York heiress who in the 60's became one of Warhol's stars and Factory regulars. She often appeared shirtless in his films. Her own performance work often involved calling her slightly crazy mom in front of a large audience and riling her mother up. Now she has left that world and returned into the upper east side life she came from. Apparently the synthesis of her many worlds is tabloid needlepoint! Thank to Harper's.> Scott on 02/27/09 #
