dorothy draper fever sweeps NYC

Back in her day, Dorothy Draper was America's best known decorator. Find out why at The Museum of the City of New York's current exhibit: The High Style of Dorothy Draper (through Sept 10th) or at least catch the cliff-notes version currently on display at Bergdorf Goodman's 5th ave windows... or at least check out the newly released IN THE PINK: Dorothy Draper, America's most Fabulous Decorator by Carleton Varney. Want more? Between Dorothy Draper and Carleton Varney there are countless decorating books sure to cure you of the white cube...

Curbed

Curbed

i have been waiting for just the right link on this site to share. But why keep waiting - it is all too good. NY realestate + gossip... from the layout of the olsen twins apt to the new proposal for 2 columbus circle to the dollar value of pale male's nest on 5th ave.

the art form that dare not speak its name

I raised a brow when i noticed the NYC American Craft Museum on 53rd street changed it name to the Museum of Arts and Design... and then sort of forgot. Because after all, haven't we had enough of the ART v. CRAFT debate for this decade? But if you are still interested, or have ever pondered the reason they took "craft" out of their title: "the negative associations for craft were so great that no amount of money could effectively overcome them." To summarize, the bad connotations of Art are "highbrow" (exclusivity) while any bad connotations of Craft are usually "low" (potpourri). So obviously, if you are a big institution that needs a lot of MONEY you refer to yourself as an Art museum, yet still show a lot of craft, which is what all the museums are doing right now anyways. To read further, check out the article in todays NY Times.

low flo

Excited about the Philidelphia Museum of Art hosting a "retrospective" of the work of "modernist pioneer" Florence Knoll Bassett? well, prepare to be totally underwhelmed. After being greeted by blank stares at the help desk my partner and i navigated the enormous museum to finally come upon an space roughly the size of a manhattan SRO room. "Perhaps there will be interesting books then in the gift shoppe" i thought to myself. Not really. perhaps i came to the museum to see the beautiful collection of shaker artifacts, yes that was it....

the manhattan bridge

this is my favorite new discovery for today: the paths over the manhattan bridge have just been upgraded! southern is for peds and the northern side is exclusively for bikes. there is a newly worked dismount ramp (and you can reach a pretty good speed on the descent without fear) and the street bike lanes surrounding the brooklyn side have been painted blue like the bridge. Anyone who has taken out a tourist or two crossing the brooklyn bridge (whether you meant to or not) will especially apprectiate the lack of gawkers standing in your way.
