Adorn magazine and Velcro are sponsoring a very cool competition: just design an original craft or household project using Velcro, and you can win a Rowenta professional iron, an Adorn subscription, and $500 in cash -- plus your project will be featured in the fall issue of the magazine! All the details are here, and the deadline is May 1, so you have plenty of time to come up with a great idea.

crafty weekend plans?

Take an amazing free craft class this weekend, while you check out cool handmade work from dozens of crafters! First, on Saturday in Los Angeles, Felt Club will have workshops in needle felting, shrink art, and spinning yarn. On Sunday in Portland, Jen of DIY Lounge will be teaching vintage chenille flower-making at Crafty Wonderland. Both sales are the second weekend of every month, so if you're too busy (or too far away) to make it this time, mark your calendars for 9/10 and 10/8! p.s. Felt Club is moving to a new location, the Echo, and a new day, Sundays, starting in September.

Adorn

Adorn, a new quarterly crafty-fashion mag, premiered this week... and it's fantastic. The first issue is filled with colorful, clever ideas for embellishing clothes, housewares, and everything in between. And be sure to check out their blog when you have a minute, too!

get your craft on this weekend

If you're on the left coast and looking to get (or shop) crafty this weekend, stop by Felt Club (in LA this Saturday) or Crafty Wonderland (in Portland this Sunday). In addition to tons of cool handmade stuff for sale, Felt Club offers an array of delightful bake sale treats, while Crafty Wonderland offers a free DIY table hosted by Sister Diane of Church of Craft (this month's project is felt flowers, in honor of Mother's Day). Each sale repeats on the second weekend of the month year-round, and they're both open to new vendors, so apply online for upcoming shows if you're interested in participating. p.s. thanks for buying handmade!

interactive crafty atlas--add your favorites

Conceptual artists who rent by the hour and beer-guzzling knitters. Soap Box Derby racing demons and musicians that "play" bicycles. Zine librarians and ecological fashionistas. Vegan strippers wearing
homemade pasties. Artists working strictly with condiments. Dumpster-diving gallerists.

In an attempt to collaborate, commemorate and enunciate the wonderful world of craft, Platial has developed an online Craft Atlas. It is by no means comprehensive, but one day it will be. Think of it as a budding collaboration. If we all gather up our resources we can make this a definitive guide to creativity. So spread the word and add to the Atlas!

1.) Register at Platial.com

2.) Login and click "Add a Place."

3.) Just start adding your Places to craft, buy crafts, or find supplies!

Platial.com is the free, social, collaborative atlas. Thanks to Paige for passing the info on.

two stylish blogs to peruse

I've been missing Budget Living lately (sigh) and was so delighted to find shelterrific this week--it's a super-cool guide to all things home-related, written by former BL staffers. It's updated daily or so with clever new recipes, craft ideas, reviews, pictures, and other inspiring and pretty things.

And thanks to this lovely article on cupcakes in the San Francisco Chronicle, I came across the incomparable Cupcake Bakeshop. Chockylit posts her own delightful recipes (like Papaya-Coconut Cupcakes with Ginger-Lime Cream Cheese Frosting, which she concocted for a recent dinner party) with gorgeous step-by-step and finale photos.

Queen Bee studio sale!

If you're a fan of Queen Bee handmade bags and accessories, don't miss her studio sale of one-of-a-kinds, seconds, and lots of new stuff on Sunday, March 12, from 12-4. It's at 1847 E. Burnside St. #103 in Portland, Oregon.
